Hi All, Not sure if I'm posting in the right place if not move me please.
Not new to Ultima's, built the first GTR around 2000 and used on the track for a couple of years, upgraded the standard HO 350 engine for a knight racing 55o H.P unit. repainted it and Ultima registered the car for the road, Refitted the HO 350 engine.
Built a Can Am soon after that, fitted the GTR Knight racing engine after Peter Knight upgraded again to 640 H.P. 583 lBS Torque, Kinsler Injection/ Motec M48
etc etc. used it for a while, hurt my back so had a couple of years restoring motorcycles ( a bit of light work )
Now I'm back, stripping out the Can Am and converting it to a GTR. Ultima says no one has done this before unless anyone can say different ?
Will post some pictures when I learn how too.
Also building a SGT40 at the moment, it's all but ready and being IVA tested in a week or so, then it's off to the paint shop.
The conversion is a stop gap until the GT40 is painted.

Are you planning to convert to GTR and retain the registration mark from the Canam. I have wanted to do this but have always been worried that the DVLA would not have it.

Doug

You are either single or retired. If not, how do you get away with all the work time on these toys?????

If I may ask. What is the reason for converting to a GTR rather than selling and starting again?

I have personal experience that it is a costly job to rebuild an Ultima, which is pretty much what you will be doing.

Car is registered as an Ultima is dosen't state a convertible so not a problem
I am married with an understanding wife, run my own business and used to working longer hours.. If not working on cars either reading about them or photographing them.

I have purchased the body panels I need from Ultima that they class as defective. The rear canopy was a gel coat colour defect which I still can't find and matters not when painted. The roof section is cracked and an easy repair as was one door, cost was much much cheaper.
A lot of the other bits from the can am fit the Gtr.
Will post pictures soon
Cheers

Would you be prepared to PM me the relevant page of the V5C so I can compare it with mine?

Change your ID mate.......... Doug the Do-er......... a hard working dog understates your abilities.

There exist a few that can create with very basic and in a short space of time......... tea and nut scratching sure waste life.

Hi Doug and welcome smile

Are you planning to modify the Can-Am chassis or switch for a GTR one? That would seem to be the biggest slice of the project (other than new bodywork of course).

I believe from other posts that the car is built on a GTR chassis allready?

Correct, ( Who's been brousing the GT40 Forum then ! ) when I ordered the can am I ordered it with a GTR chassis except for the 2 centre roll bars and across the screen bar.
This has since been ordered for me to weld on in a few weeks.
Some Body sections and other parts like gauges, switches rear lights etc there all interchangable.
I always keep a record of costs and don't anticipate any unforseen price horrors.

By the way there's a mean looking black Ultima with pictures on this forum with Shark Gill vents in the front wings, does anyone know where they got them ?
Cheers

Either host them on PhotoBucket etc and use [img] tags or use the (beta) image uploader though not tried that myself.

If you quote this post you will see what I mean....

Two pictures of the trial fit of the centre section.
Also drilled all the gauge holes in the dash today and ordered a new GPS speedo from Speedhut in the USA.

I would make some enquiries about that with VOSA. They test the speedo on rollers at IVA so may well fail it.

Just an observation but anything that you put foreward of the sidepod covers will get rain water directly into it when you open the doors

Hi ALL, The car has been fully SVA'd and road legal by Ultima Years ago.
I know that current builds and IVA would not allow GPS I can understand why as well but by all accounts it's more accurate as long as the Satalite dont crash.
Not had a problem with water before on either car but dont go out too much in bad weather.
My first GTR I used on the circuit for a couple of years and it did rain a lot.. Love V8 rear wheel cars in the wet !
Today I fitted all the furniture bits to the centre section and extended a bit of wiring as I have moved the tacho over a bit.
Working again on the Ultima reminds me of how nice they are to work on, compared to my current GT40 build and everything else I have built over the years there a breeze.
Next real job will be when the Roll cage parts arrive, I'll have to remove some of the ally panelling to get good welds on.
A new door on the drivers side is on back order as is the top door hinges. ( about a week or so ).
Lastly I'm not building two at once ,, well not two Ultimas
In 1999 I built a GTD40, 2 years after that I sold it, Then Built my 1st GTR, I think it was one of the very first GTR's after the compamies demo car. That's the blue one in the picture.
Ordered the Can Am with GTR chassis.
Currently near completion and going through IVA is my SGT40, which then after paint will be finished and ready for the road.

Cheers
