The question has arisen regarding exporting an Ultima to France I have heard that you have to bring it back once a year for its MOT and TAX ? but I think that is to keep the English plates, but does anybody know the procedure for actually registering it with French plates and cost,
thanks.
thanks.
Interesting, I have been researching this recently. My research has shown that the Ultima GTR is basically categorized as a kit car and kit cars cannot have French plates according to French Law. However my understanding is that EU law can be interpreted slightly differently as a Vehicle type recognized in one EU state must also be acknowledged in all other EU States? Plenty written on the speed, plod & Law section and International - France section of the forum on this subject in the past. I would also be very interested to hear from anyone who has managed to find a legal loophole and done it.

My understanding is that it is not possible to register it in France.
However, I believe the registration process is very local so the more rural you are the more likley you are to be good friends with the Maire. I suspect that may be why there is at least one Ultima registered in France.

Yes one Ultima has been registered in France. It's not impossible just very difficult.
The car must be tested and checked by the "DRIRE" which is the official french office
for vehicles. There is one in each department.
But to be accepted you have very hard conditions (pollution and noise especially
plus lighting, european conformity, etc...) as an Ultima has no "COC" (Certificate Of Conformity).
It must be "une réception à titre isolé" and it's long, difficult and expensive, without to be sure
to manage...
The one which has been registered was "old" (2002) so less conditions, and very classic engine
and exhaust system. But to be honest, it has been registered in doubtfull conditions and I've
been told it was about €6,000...
But even for my Ultima I can't use this way as noise and pollution
aren't acceptable... I'm still with UK plates.

Same way in Switzerland and the costs for all the different test make it bl**dy expensive and way more than in France. The road is paved with rocks and administrative bananas
