Hi,

Has anyone used a motorcycle gauge cluster in their ULTIMA? I am thinking of going this route since it appears that the clusters are self contained, cheaper than race car gauges - especially if bought from the wreckers (breakers for the UK inclined) and generally made to be read at an angle.

Any thoughts???

Maybe a good price point saving, but ask yourself how much you will actually save when selling compared to a 'standard' Ultima clock array.

After all, we are told that an original 'Ultima supplied' parts car will fetch more than a 'bitzer'.

If most people have shed £40k plus to do the job properly then why would they 'save' a few hundred and go with bike guages? All IMO, but I am sure the PH collective will voice their opinion

Sorry should have been more specific. The question was not primarily asked to realize cost savings but to see if a more ergonomic solution - a la ENZO Ferrari - could be obtained.

A straight ahead vantage of the tachometer, speedo and other important check light functions would in my opinion be better.

I know there is a stack dash option available, however I guess some of us (builders) like to experiment while others are content to keep within the envelope of the status quo, but that is entirely a personal preference and another topic for discussion.

The 'straight ahead' is, as you say, covered by the Stack and is also an accepted alternative to the factory dials.
If you had come up with some form of 'head up' display I would be the first to agree it was a step forward.
Unfortunately a M/C instrument cluster recovered from a scrappy would look just that and no more.

Oh I don't know if it would be so bad!

I haven't embedded this as it screws the page up, but www.freewebs.com/mega-r1/clocks.jpg gives you an idea

Just one example of a set of bike clocks (Yamaha R1)

The big rev counter/digital speedo looks good in my opinion. Your biggest problem would be that bike wheels are generally 17", not 18" so however you get the input, it would need recalculating.

Errr... the other problem is that there aren't many V8 bikes out there to my knowledge?

You might find that a struggle when trying to get a rev counter to work with a chevy!

You might want to try custom gauges from www.greenguages.com. I have an array of their gauges in mine - speedo, tacho, fuel etc are arranged in a modified Honda CRX instrument binncale directly behind the wheel plus temps/pressure gauges are fitted mid-dash.
