flywheel and ring gear question
Discussion
OK, I feel like a dumba$$ for even asking this, but I am left scratching my head here...
I am fitting my adapter plate/flywheel/ring gear and clutch today. I am having some difficulty in figuring out how the flywheel and ring gear fit with the adapter plate. It would appear that the ring gear would want to fit on the engine side of the flywheel, but when its bolted up that way, the ring gear will not fit inside the adapter plate. (I do have the flywheel facing the correct way, with the bolt recesses away from the engine)
I have looked at the build manual, the buld sites, and there are no really good pictures that answer my question...
Thanks!

Hi Allen-GTR,
Don't feel bad about asking this sort of question, not being that technical minded my answer may sound worse. Unfortunately I am not in the country at the moment so I am going from memory and my trusty lap-top.First of all you bolt the adaptor plate to the engine and then you bolt the flywheel with the ring gear side nearest to the engine. This is for when the starter motor turns and throws its cog out it engages with the ring gear the gear box side of the adaptor plate. Of course this is for the Getrag setup but I am assuming the G50 is the same principle.I have found a photo that I will post on my local pubs car club site that wii explain it better than I can. www.the-angel-inn.net/car-club-d

The adaptor goes on first but remember to post the lower bolts through the plate first from the engine side. They cannot be fitted later as they foul the sump. It is probably a good time to fit the studs in the upper holes of the adaptor as they will be easier to do before the flywheel gets in the way. Now the flywheel can go on. It is a close fit within the adaptor.

Well, after looking at the pictures on the build CD, I am more confused...
My ring gear is a seperate piece.
It appears on the CD that if it is a a standard clutch is used (mine is... a Sachs) then the ring gear is fitted to the pressure plate, and not the flywheel. My ring gear won't quite fit on the pressure plate I have. It would go if it were heated and/or pressed on, but if I am wrong, I will never get the little beast back off. I can't imagine it would need to be a press fit since there are 9 bolts holding it anyway....
What I think I will do is take a few pictures and email them to the factory. It appears there are a number of ways this can be done, depending on clutch, gearbox type and year, etc.
I was hoping to get that done today, but looks like I will have to find another project. (always more of those!)
Thanks!
