Engine Access at Firewall

Hi All,

I presume the only way to get to a timing set, or change a camshaft (or even a water pump), is to remove the engine...unless the firewall could be made with access panels, or could be removed completely. Is making the firewall removeable a reasonable consideration?

Interesting questions.

I am in the process of having to replace my front oil seal in the timing cover, due to an excessive oil leak from a faulty part. This is just about possible with about 5” of clearance from the vibration damper and the bottom section of the firewall. It would also be possible to access the timing chain, which would require removal of the waterpump, which again is possible in a standard car (just take care of you back etc. access is not easy!).

As for removing the camshaft I am not sure if a removable firewall, or access panel will help, you will probable find chassis rails getting in the way. Sometimes you will just have to bite the bullet and remove the engine!

Wow, five whole inches!? Okay, it looks like I will have to fugure that out...as soon as I have my GTR, that is. Or, I will have to get used to the taste of bullets.
