There is no such thing as a slow Ultima.
For drive-ability, the nearer standard the engine the better the drive-ability obviously.
If you only want a car for road use then there is little point in more than 600hp. Remember, there are no electronic aids to help keep you on the black stuff in such a light car.
If you go for a standard engine at the start there is nothing to stop you tuning at a later date.
There are plenty of build diaries available on the web so a read through them will answer most of your questions.

Actually, for road use, 355hp from a standard ZZ4 motor is more than sufficient!Paul
At the moment it is enough for me but in the future.........

Cheers for the ino so far just trying to get a feel for the ultima before I take the plunge running a 500 bhp plus m400 noble at mo so sounds like ls 7 is favoured option
The other often spoken about choice is the LS3. Some favour one over the other and there are pros and cons both ways. Horses for courses and from what (albeit limited knowlesdge) the real deciding factor for LS7 over LS3 is trackuse.drivin_me_nuts said:

I'm in the LS3 camp.... My rationale being that for a light car, a 500bhp LS3 will be a great starting point for what will be a 90% road car. It will still have a better power/weight ratio that my previous Ariel Atom and should I decide to, I can add more horses later on. In reality, I expect I'll not mod it any further, as I doubt I'd be able to use any more power on our crappy roads anyway!!If you're building a track monster, then fair enough, fill yer boots with as much power as you fancy!
