Ordered myself a GTR... decision was made after a ride on the 2012 open day naturally.

Will set up a build thread/page when she arrives, so for now meticulously planning the stages and costs to get the most out of my build time (3 month stints off work).

cheers beer

Welcome.

Questions are bound to come along and we can usually help but you may find more than one answer.

Take your time with the build. It is important to enjoy it and not let it rule your (and any family) life.

Thanks Paul, appreciate the advice. Good thing is no family as of yet nor planned during the build!

With regards to your comment on the recent Build Manual thread, I've opted for a driveable Ultima. Pleased I've been thinking along the same lines. I've also gone for the pedal box extension being 6'3"

So that should be two being started roughly the same time. Hope you enjoy the build too.

Cheers

Nice one!

Remember, measure twice, cut (or drill) once wink

Hey Stig,

I tried that and failed at least twice. I now measure once, write it down, do something else, go to the pub, go to bed. Next day measure again and if they match yesterday's then do it, if not do something else and leave the pub out this time

Well she's now in her new home. Many thanks to the lads at the factory for helping me lift into the van and also thanks to Mark999 for the chassis dolly and the look around. biggrin

Hi Sam

You looked far too young to build an Ultima................. most of us are old gits. Something to do with having disposable income left after all the other "more important" bills are paid. This usually involves waiting for offspring to leave the nest. Hence old gits (well my wife calls me a git......so I must be one).

You probably don't want an old git's advice but mine would be.. Take your time and enjoy the build.

Good choice, and best of luck. Where abouts are you based? If you ever need any advice there are plenty of knowledgeable people on here, and there are no stupid questions!

I don't know who the youngest builder/owner of an Ultima is to be fair. I'm based in Lincoln and thanks for the friendly advice, I'm sure there are things that will crop up.

Just been finishing the garage off, a few more tools acquired, hobby starts Monday... clap

Biggest tip I can think of is get a decent rivnut tool. We bought several which were rubbish before spending a bit more on a Teng one - does the job very well.

I guess the same can be said for a rivet tool too, but an air riveter will save you years of your life when doing the alloy panelling, and do a much neater job too.

OK I'll have a look at the Teng Rivnut tool. Got an airline and air riveter on the way to save some of my life!

Tip 1.
Do not drill/rivet the top edge of the front bulkhead and engine bay bulkhead.

I think Steve means don't rivet it - UNTIL you fit the cockpit in place......you do drill it though... (Steve will correct me if I am wrong)

Correct, you fit the cockpit then drill through the body/alloy panel/chassis, otherwise you'll be trying to match the holes already drilled in the chassis, if that makes sense?

Makes sense but I'll have to match up a new alloy panel due to having the revised chassis with permanent roll cage. The GRP is cut out to drop down over them now. Will leave that then. Thanks for the tip.

Don't drill at ali panel stage. When the body is on you can drill through GF, ali, steel.
If you drill at the early stage you have no way of 'finding' the holes with the body on.
You should bond the ali panels in place as you rivet so for this top edge (without rivets) clamp the ali to the chassis using a strip of wood until the sealant cures.
