Jon Olsson's Ultima
Discussion
Basically an advert - and I abhor Gumball type 'ooh, look at me - I'm a Playa' events. Why not do some 'proper' circuit racing?
Looks like he's remodelled the bodywork again? Can't be much Ultima left in it these days?
Oh, I guarantee he span the 'drift' too - nice cutaway in the edit
Ps. Have been up since 05:30, so if this post sounds miserable - it probably is
Pps. Jon seems like a decent enough guy and occasionally posts here - so no disrespect meant. But it's all a bit 'Ken Block' (the brand). Still, it brings the sponsors in I s'pose.

LOL saw that on the earlier "V10" thread and thought exactly the same thing, left it way to late in the edit to hide the inevitable.
If you look at the track closely there are a number of "offs" there (tire marks) and if that was the best attempt for the camera,
Nice car though.

I have to say that the car looks awesome. More photos here:

I may be different from others on here.
I applaud the creativity of those involved in the building of such a stunning car. I know how expensive these changes can be so if it takes advertising to help pay for it then so-be-it if you can get it. The Gumball generates media interest to justify the advertising spend, so it's an obvious route to find for a self build car with no obvious race series and is way cheaper to compete in too (ask Jonny at MacG Racing!).
The Ultima GTR is an evocation of the 1980s Group C cars and I see what Jon has done is create an evocation of a 2012 LMP1 car using an Ultima as the basis.
Building a car from boxes of parts supplied by the manufacturer is much easier than doing your own design, moulds, layup, finishing, etc, etc. Yes, he has started with someone else's product (Ultima) and yes he has probably paid others to help make his vision a reality but it is still a major achievement.
I love my (slightly modified) Ultima and intend to keep it until I can't get in (even threatened my children that I want to be buried in it!). However, I would love to build another using a body design similar to Jon's as it looks stunning IMO.

It looks superb. Does anyone know what the aerodynamic benefits of the front splitter bending upwards in the middle are? Looks cool, but surely more airflow goes under the car? I don't have a clue about aerodynamics but find it interesting.
I'm guessing he's trying to ram air into the middle of the underside of the car to get the air speed up.More aie speed = less pressure, slower air over the top of the car = more pressure vis a vis down-force of some sort is created.
I agree with Paul, I wholly applaud the project. While I do think the Gumball has disappeared up it's own backside these days, if it helps people develop cars like this, then I'll get over it.
Jon O's previous car looked fantastic and this incarnation (update of the original car or a new one??) just looks awesome. The standard Ultima isn't exactly shy & retiring, but Jon's updates really make it look brutal. The Group C to LMP1 look really works nicely on the car, hats off to the team who designed / built it - regardless of the ££££s involved, it's still a great piece of design.
Because I'm sad, I'd like to know more about the build. I'd like to see how much of the chassis has been retained, what's happening in the engine room and generally see the lifecycle of the build.

Me too (including the sad bit...). It looks as if the car is running a wider than standard track, and It would be interesting to know how this was done - wheel size and offset or spacers I would guess, but it looks quite a chunky increase in the photos (based on the possibly incorrect assumption that the middle of the car is standard width).LuckyP said:
Me too!! Good on him!!
Yes agree. More info to be found here. Has made it to St Petersburg! Hopefully in Monaco by the end of the week.http://jon-olsson.com/

From photos on FB, it looks like some machinery have not gone very far and finished on the wayside! What a pity, but I guess money is not a problem for certain....
I'm on Gumball at the moment, the rain has been absolutely abysmal at times and people haven't been driving like loons when the crashes happened, both aquaplaned out of controlThe more I see of this car, the more I love it - proper mental stuff (in a very good way).
