How to tell it's an LSD

Apart from the serial number how do you tell if it's an LSD inside.

On the outside of my box it had 993 LSD but just looked the details up in the 993 workshop manual and it says it's a normal diff.

Now, if I turn the main shaft both output shafts turn the same way. If I turn the output shaft the other one goes the opposite way. Isn't that what a slip diff should do?

It would be hard to create the correct conditions to cause the LSD to lock when turning by hand....you need a fair bit of torque/speed.

What you can do is open the inspection cover on the side of the gearbox diff housing (oval shaped with two M8 hex head bolts holding it on). You should be able to see in through there. When I peered in mine I could see the diff cage and the bevel gears inside.

Best bet, avoid the confusion, undo the bolts on the output flanges pull them out, undo the side plate nuts, pull the crownwheel and diff, if you see planetary gears and nothing else, you have no lim/slip, if you have a casing that is enclosed, your on the money!

Two lines of rubber and you have an LSD, one line then you dont!

Put the car on jacks with the transaxle in gear.

Spin one wheel, if the other spins in the same direction, it's an LSD.

If it spins in the other direction, it's an open diff.
