difference between G50 box and G50-50

I think "yes" is the short answer. I use the G50-50 for the longer gearing which gives slightly more relaxed (if that is the word) cruising. It also has the advantage of the limited slip diff which is noticable in the wet if your enthusiasm overtakes you. (ie. It prevents the back of the car doing the same).

This may help. I re-geared my 50/50 to match the corvette since I am running an ls1.
Stock g50/50 or 50/52
ring 3.4444 1st 3.154, 2nd 1.789, 3rd 1.269, 4th .967, 5th .756
stock corvette gearing
ring 3.42 1st 2.66, 2nd 1.78, 3rd 1.30, 4th 1.00, 5th .74 6th .50
My g50/50

It sounds like those are 'cast in' type numbers.
You are looking for a stamped number. It goes across the box with the G5052 on the face of a lug with the rest of the number 2 12345 on a lug with a slightly lower surface.
This is just after the diff as the box starts to taper away to the shift link and will be directly on the top or bottom of the box depending which way up you have the box.
