Pitched up at Knockhill Saturday and found starter would not turn engine. Motor turning OK but pinion not engaging. Spoilt a good day slightly (although watching flames from Dave Fiddes' machine compensated somewhat) but plenty willing hands to push start. Got round to removing starter today and found this

Prior to this had one instance of starter not working but after a few tries engaged OK. Wish I had checked then. I suspect the spring clip holding pinion on shaft must have come off and loose pinion interfered with ring gear breaking shaft. I found the pinion in the starter cavity - it had been rattling around but not much damage to gearbox housing. Bit of broken pinion was found in bottom of bellhousing, luckily out of harms way and easily fished out when rubber inspection cover removed.

So I need a new shaft, pinion retaining clip and pinion (as it is slightly beat up).

Any ideas where I could get parts for the Hi torque IHI starter in UK?? Pity to have to buy complete unit.

I've had problems with the pinion on mine and have replaced it three times to-date!
The factory will sell you a pinion(bendix) kit, they usually have them in stock, last time I spoke to them I was told that they now have an alternative starter that solves the problem.
