G97/88 transaxle?
Discussion
All,
Does anyone have an opinion on the G97/88 transaxle. It came with 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS 6spd.
Is it as good or better then the g50/52? Pros/Cons
How much ~HP/torque can it withstand?
I'm searching for the factory gear ratio specs now.
There is one available locally and I could possible be in the market.
Thanks,
Jim

Don't know too much about this version, though should be robust enough for the application.Does anyone have an opinion on the G97/88 transaxle. It came with 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS 6spd.

If it's a track car then I'd think alright, high first gear with reasonable spacing but not ideal for a torquey (real word?) V8, they really don't need so many gears in an Ultima) but for road I'd suggest 1st gear is too high and any traffic queue situation is going to rapidly piss you off, I have a G50/52 (which has a lower 1st than that GT2 box) and often wish I had a lower 1st for low speed (crawling) work.
I believe there's a lot of commonality between the GT2/3 & Turbo transmissions from the 996/7 gen cars. Strength isn't going to be much of an issue as the factory GT2 RS came with 612bhp & 500+lb/ft in a car that is hauling more weight.
There's always a lot of debate on gear ratios, but that's personal preference. I'm finding my G96/50 to be a perfect 'box in my Ult. People complain about 1st being too short, but I don't find that at all (even crawling in Birmingham traffic when I take it to work). To be honest, I find all 6 gears nicely spaced and wouldn't change 'em at all. Horses for courses.

I have a G50-52 with five speeds. In my opinion 5 gears are plenty with an LS7. You end up changing gear very quickly with 5 as it is. Sometimes the actual change takes longer than the acceleration between the gears. Therefore, less is more.
I would rather see an automated shift (PDK) as I think it would make the car even faster through the gears.
In the real world though I find that on the road I can usually blast past most cars in either 5th or for an ego killer, drop into 4th or 3rd and watch them get smaller in the mirrors.
The main trick is to end up with a 5th gear good for over 200mph so motorway speeds are reasonably relaxed. 50 in first is going to see your thigh muscles grow in traffic though.

I have the 4wd version of that box and put a 3.1 final drive in it and a taller 1st gear.... 35mph/1000 in 6th
Taller 1st gear presumably to crack 0-60 in one hit so to speak, but then you have the circa 10 mph at tick-over in traffic, I think the clutch weight mentioned earlier is a valid point but I have already reduced the clutch cylinder ratios to the point of hitting the pedal to the floor for full disengagement, I have either a weak leg, a clutch pack with too higher spring weight or am just too fussy.Porsche I think use a servo actuated system, perhaps that is the way to go but have heard the control (in aftermarket applications)is a bit on/off.
track use and slicks will kill a regular G50, I heard that too, especially from owners
that use it with a porsche car. So for track you will need to go 996/997 turbo or GT2/3 boxes with oil cooling. Some install stronger synchros but I would assume that is not really necessary. A bog standard GT3 from the production line
survived the 24 hours of nurburgring.
The next problem will be that not all factory parts are race spec, so be ready to change your wishbones, maybe hubs and other
machinery for abuse on track. Ultima is not selling a race car, it is a road car with race heritage. Look at SLS and PORSCHE GT race spec cars.
they cost typcially 2-3 times ot their road going brothers.

but 964 rs and gt3 996 never broke
in track , i have not never see it.
i think that g50/52 (turbo 5) is sufficient for only use in track.
other my friens used M3 and never broke in many years....
exige idem
and they not cost much...
than, ultima gtr MUST resist in track!
not ufficial race, but in track day for 30 minutes!

If you want better V8 ratios just put a 3.0 ring and pinion in a 996/997 gear box.
So I'd like to hear more about this and any examples out there of cars using it.I have a GTR with an LS7 engine. Super build (I didn't do it) and the final drive is my only beef I have with the car. At 70 mph the engine is turning 2400 rpm (or so). In a Z06 Corvette it turns 1650 I believe. My first gear is really unusable and even the prior owner/builder started it off in second which really does feel like a proper first gear. So I was considering a 3.0 ring.
First, do these implicit ratios cited by RPM and MPH sound familiar? And is anyone running the 3.0 ring/pinion? And from whom did you purchase it?
Thx,
V

Not sure if these are the same gear ratios as yours. See the chart for a 3.0 ring.First, do these implicit ratios cited by RPM and MPH sound familiar? And is anyone running the 3.0 ring/pinion? And from whom did you purchase it?

see this page http://www.californiamotorsports.net/996.htm and look down to the "ALBINS 996 RING AND PINION" section.
Guys, below are numbers for 2010 GT3 R. So Porsche did a 2.889 ratio that would be just about perfect with G96/9750 ratios and presumably available as P parts. Does anyone know if the CW & P fits in 996 / 997 turbo boxes or is this a pic-n-mix too far?
Gear ratios:
Drop gear 25/32 1.280
CW & P 09/26 2.889
1st gear 13/41 3.154
2nd gear 17/39 2.294
3rd gear 20/37 1.850
4th gear 23/35 1.522
5th gear 22/28 1.273
6th gear 31/34 1.097
