Hi just wondered what the thinking is on insurance while you build? Can this be obtained and where, as obviously there will be a few pounds worth even in the early stages.

Got mine from Adrian Flux although not that much cheaper than insuring on the road although it is the complete kit so does have some considerable value.

From my experience, proper 'build' insurance has become a thing of the past. A year or so ago, I tried everywhere and the only option that was offered to me what in-fact 'layed up' insurance, which strictly speaking is not the same thing as the car should be registered.... and hugely expensive it was too! I would say as expensive as my fully comp-on-the-road insurance at least!
Seems that the industry is no longer interested in providing us builders with a reasonable alternative any more! Shame on them!
Might be worth exploring the possibility of extending your home content insurance? I don't think they will insure vehicles, however your car is-not-a-car until it is fully put together and registered is it?

If I do this build thing again, I think I might try to put together something like this? It would have to be a declared item, but hey! I can see it now:

Home Insurance - Valuable section:
1 Nutter Engine Exhibition piece - £27,000
1 Working gearbox Exhibition piece - £7,000
1 Full size Model of an Ultima - £55,000

etc

My build is covered by my home insurance. Vehicle insurance will only be applied once the Ultima is on the way to it's homologation and registration.

Thanks for the replies. Just seems a bit crazy you could have easy 50k parts in your garage go on Holiday, then come back to find nothing!!!Cant really accept that risk level, so need to sort something

My biggest fear is fire eek. If the workshop burns, I loose everything including my C43 as thats where it sits and hibernates during the winter months

Seems Adrian Flux do it, or did until last year going by this post.

What a surprise Daniel!
Seems we have possibly something more in common...
I had a C43 AMG for 10 years until I sold it a few years ago - I loved that car! Wolf-in-sheeps-clothing.
Was looking at a porsche at our dealers, took porsche 911 out for test drive... found it (Yes!)strangely less than exciting - not what I expected... was taken round the corner by the Salesman to look at this AMG... I remember him saying " Don't be put off by the looks (Grandad car), just lets go out on a drive" - I did - I was HOOKED! and it was absolutely monstrous - fun- exciting - and that growl of the engine - wow! So I had 10 very happy years with that car!

A very under-rated car - powerful, fast, and surprising good round corners! Well it would be at well over 300 bhp at the wheels!

wish I had kept it now!

Keith, isn't there a saying which goes like "Two of a feather flock together..."?

Sorry if it is OT and apologies to the OP for this "invasion", but I just have to say that I love my 43. A real granddaddy vehicle in sheep's clothing or a perfect "sleeper" as say our friends on the other side of the Atlantic. It has been modified with 18" Monos, drilled front discs and heavy duty pads and in the suspension department with a fully adjustable KW setup, secondary de-cat and resonator delete exhaust. She can growl very angrily when needed, but keeps quite when cruising past the men in blue. The engine is standard apart from some Green Filters. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 55 engine when the Ultima is finished...
