Finally, last night, I got all those little bugs worked out. She started right up! It has been several years since I last heard an Ultima run; man what a sound!
A few little details to attend to (alignment, ride height, half shafts, final check of all nuts/bolts) but it shouldn't be long. The weather this weekend in Denver is calling for 4 inches of snow!
The next big hurdle is licensing and registration. Mostly its a matter of getting the right paperwork to the right person on a day when they are in a good mood.
I do have to take it to the Colorado State Police to get a VIN number assigned and get roadworthiness approval. THAT should be an intersting conversation!
I have insurance lined up with ANPAC, so that is taken care of.
Anyway, I am pretty pleased!

It really was the battery. There was a bad cell. It produced the voltage, but was very weak in the amperage. The cell had shorted, and burned a hole in the bottom of the battery case. As luck would have it, the rubber pads I have the battery sitting on sealed the acid enough to prevent it from leaking out until I removed the battery. Of course then it poured out. When I was working with the EFI tech, we were measuring voltage, which was up to standard, which made the real issue difficult to identify.
Anyway, a replacement battery (Oddesey PC 625) worked perfectly. I now have a strong blue spark (stong enough to make you say bad words...ask me how I know)
No leaks in fuel, oil, or water. I was losing fuel pressure, and I could hear the pressure falling off. The fuel was not leaking, but I WAS getting a loss of pressure. I found the fuel filter was not screwed up tight against it's O-ring. A quick wrench tightened that up, went to 45 lbs and held. Then it fired off instantly.
With all the times I had tried to start it with no avail, I really didn't expect it to fire and when it finally did, I about pee'd on myself...

Engine details:
Chevy 389
Edelbrock aluminum heads-70cc (Torn down and rebulit out of the box)
Lots of other valvetrain goodies...
Screaming Eagle rotating assy
Pistons tops/skirts, valves and bearings Calico ceramic coated
Comp cams - Duration @ .050-236 intake, 244 exhaust, Lobe seperation 108.0
Edelbrock EFI
Mallory electronic distributor
Pulled 500hp on the dyno
I had the engine built with adding a supercharger in mind. Next spring I will probably add another 150hp...
Built by Competition Engines in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I met these guys at the national AETC (Advanced Engine Technology Conference). They recently placed VERY highly in Hot Rod Magazine's engine competition. Great guys to work with, and they know their stuff. Period.
Expect about 8K for a similar spec.
I work at the AETC each year. In one room you have access to talk one on one with guys like Kenny Dutweiler, Bill Ford... Crew chiefs from about any race team you can mention in NASCAR, CART, IRL, Engineers from Comp Cams, FAST... Pretty cool.
(NOT a advertisement, just a good opportunity to meet people that know their s...stuff)

It is a 74 block.
The emissions requirement for the county I am in for a kit car goes by the year the block. I need to pass an idle test only with 1974 standards. Also, '74 was pre cats of course, so I avoid all of that. Some counties in Colorado would not have required an emissions test at all with the 74 block, but I didn't get THAT lucky.... with a well tuned car, thats not a tough test to pass.
Under Colorado rules, I can still title the car as a 2005.
Oh, and our UK friends will LOVE this... My equivilant of SVA? I need to provide 2 pictures (one front and left side, one rear and right side) to prove the car roadworthy. Then the State police issue a VIN number...

Of course! Let me know when you are planning. I actually live about half way between Colorado Springs and Denver. (Sothwest side of Denver)
As for the supercharger, I am thinking a Vortech. The compression ratio is 9.5:1, so I should be able to easily feed 5-6 lbs of boost without stressing the engine. The engine bulder knew I was planning one, so it was built with that goal in mind...
I need to wait until spring to work on that project. The Warden is about ready to beat me senseless as it is... I have even spent the money I had set aside for bail and impound costs, so Its time to start saving my pennies again!
I am planning to run the Silver State Classic this spring, so hopefully I will have it in by then...

Top man!
I'm moving there permanently, so there will be plenty of opportunity. I'll be selling all my cars in the UK, and fully intend building another in the States, and an Ultima is top of the list.
What speed are you aiming for in the Silver State Classic?
The first time you run the race, the top speed you can average is 130. After you have run the race once, and as long as the car you are driving meets the saftey requirements, you can run in the unlimited class at 200+. I doubt I will try to run that one ever, but somewhere in the middle would bethe goal eventually.
130 should be plenty the first time out. The race is very much timing, so it will still be challenging.
You have to qualify (really a "can you drive and do you have the danglers" test) at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. A few laps around a superspeedway should be worth the price of admission alone! 12 degree banks! Besides, we'll see if my navagator can keep from soaking my seats!
Right now, I just wanna get her buttoned up and take a test drive or two!!!!

Allen you think the Vortech will fit? from the pics i have seen, it looks like they mount the charger in front of the engine! also what trim of vortech you looking at?
should be a nice uit though. high comp and low boost will mena good drivablility with the advantage of boost. HEHE. keep us posted on how the build goes. oh yeah, you gona be running water/meth injection?
thanks Chris.

Yes, LVMS is a very cool prooving-ground.
I know some folks that have run the Silver State and are always happy to share their experiences, if you want some insight.
For anyone interested in the Silver State rules, course, records, etc., check out www.silverstateclassic.com
Heads-up, Allen. If a participant receives a moving violation (speeding ticket) on Highway 278 and/or 318 (the two event courses) within 90 days, prior to the event participant is entered in, and the event officials are properly notified, the participant will be disqualified. This is required by the Nevada
Department of Transportation.
