Hi All,

I've spend the last few hours searching this forum for gearbox info and also the links I have found.

I am just left with some puzzles, I hope someone can clear the fog...

The G50 tranny, isn't this also a Getrag unit ? With the getrag unit you mean a 6 speed box ?

For gearing the G50/50 box would be best, and also because of torque handling ? What about the G50/52 box ?

Finally I have read somethings about a G64 box, which one is this ? or is it just completely different.

As far as I can see now, the G50/50 would be a good way to go....

Thanks for any answers. I am hoping I am not picking up a never-ending story here

a G50 and a Getrag are a very different box. The Getrag is 6 speed and cable shift however the G50 is rod shift and can be either 5 or 6 speed.

They have a very different mounting patern as well.

There are other Porsche trannys out there and as for which is the best.... well that totaly depends on your application and what you want from the car.

Its not a simple choice and you must do plenty of research as the box will easily make as much difference to the car as engine choice (ie lazzy reving 400bhp or revvy 650bhp monster).

Thanks, I did not yet realize the mounting was so different.

But is the G50 made by getrag (i would think). And what is the number/name of the Getrag you are referring to ?

I also found some mention on the G64 transmission. This would be the 4wd brother of the G50. As far as I have seen the G64 was the only transmission to receive an electronically controlled diff. Is there any information out there on how this diff. work internally ?

The G64, or if you look on the casing its actualy a 964 number. It's just the later type of G50 trans. The early numbers on the Boxes started with 950, hense I take it thats where the G50 came from. They can come with 4wd, but the only difference is the last casing and the output shaft are longer....

look here for Getrag info

www.getrag.com/180/180

I do not think the G50 was made by GETRAG.

Hi,

It is my understanding that the 1998 and later (996)Porsche trannys (incidentally these are cable actuated) are made by Getrag.

The earlier trannys G50, G64 etc which are rod activated are not.

I have compiled a list of the later trannys, their gear ratios and their fitment within the Porsche 911 family on my website - see:

www.ultimabuild.com/transmission.htm

I hope this gives you some additional information.

I should also add that several well respected Porsche tranny techs have told me that the Getrag cable actuated trannys are just as good as their G50 counterparts and that it is a myth that the early G50 tranny is somehow markedly better.

The G64 series of trannys - I have a G64/20 which I intend to use on my ULTIMA - are no different internally (more likely to come with LSD though)than their G50 brethren except that they were used on the 4 wheel drive version of the 911 - such as the carrera 4 and 4S.

Just another data point.
