new owner & cold starting technique

I haven't owned a carb car for a few years so I have trouble starting the Ultima (holley carb, no choke).

Is the technique on a cold day simply to wait a few seconds while the fuel pump primes, then pump the throttle hard and fast three times, then turn the engine over with a little bit of throttle ?

If I then fail to keep it alive with revs, does it need more accelerator pumps to restart ? Or should I leave the throttle well alone at this point ?

I use 2 pumps from cold then let it spin and it always catches first time.

The choke butterfly was removed completely as it used to cause hot start issues when it came on when it felt like it, normally when hot. Other times it failed to come on when hot.

With a double pumper generally you have no need for a choke when cold as 2 'kicks' gets you running. I never move off till I am warm which doesn't take long.

I used to give it one smooth foot to the floor prod on the pedal then I would take it off and turn it over..... then when it fired I would feather the throttle.

You can start these without the pumps on as there is enough fuel in the carb to last a minute, but allowing them to prime wont hurt.

They are very easy to flood so try not to be too agressive with the throttle. It should fire easily and quickly but may take a little babying to keep alive for the first minute or two (well mine did).
