first time builder

Im thinking about building a ultima gtr probably in about 6 months but have never built a car before I know they say that 75% of clients have never built one before but would appreaciete the views of people who have been in the same situation. Also the cost i would have to do the build over about 2.5 - 3 years as im not the richest person in the world would a budget of around 35-37k be enough and what sort of spec would i get for that money. the Insurance is pretty cheep for what you get I currently have an Impreza sti type r and at 23 have been turned down by just about every insurance company in the country I rang 1 kit car insurer and they quoted me £1750 the same as my scooby I was shoked. any help would be very appreaciated

There's a pricing spreadsheet somewhere, search this forum or check the factory site. I can email it, but mine might be a bit out of date.

I think 45k is probably more realistic.

Ive been on a couple of sites that quoted 35-40k as the most common build cost i suppose it depends if u want all the extras like uprated brakes and suspention as for insurance all i wanted to know was that i could get insured as ive been quoted up to 13k to insure a scooby before

Before i started mine Ted told me the cheapest build they have had was about £25k. i think you could do it for around 30 if you just went with a fairly basic spec. lots of threads for insurance on here, msm worth a call as well.

Don't believe it. Any budget you set forget it and add alot on, then you'll be close.

Ask any builder who has been brave enough to add all the receipts up.

pee, you notice i didnt put my plan up there. i still reckon you could do it for 30 but you would have to be very strict with yourself and resist the 'shiney bits' that Ted offers.

Nick, I am a first-time builder and just about ready to place my order. I hope to have the car on the road by the end of this year (been saving for this!). I live in the States and am figuring about £43k...by the time I am done. Here's a link to a price list on the factory website.

Good luck and keep us posted on your learning curve about this car. I am still a sophmore at this...only learned about Ultima around Jan of last year. Found it (odd enough) through the Radical website.

Have been reading everything I can find on this site, engine sites, transaxle sites, and builder's sites. Still have a lot to learn, but it's time to take the plunge!

I know with a car like this the build never really stops but im talking about a price to just get one on the road and running and the shiny bits can come later when its running (over time). I rang ultima today and told him my plans and budget and he said it would be fine and told me to come to the factory for a chat and a demo

You'll get a very warm welcome at Ultimas. Guys there are a great bunch, very professional and enthusiastic in their work.

I don't think I have had dealings with a better company.

I'd never built a car before either. Had planned on taking about 18 months, but it will probably end up nearer 2 years. I've spent a bit of time head-scratching, but build sites are quite helpful and there are always people here or at the factory willing to help. Can't help much on budget, but AC looks v difficult to retro-fit so I would do this as you go if you want it. Unless you already have them, don't forget the spend on tools. I had most stuff, but bought a compressor and a coule of air tools (rt angled drill and rivetter).

My interest would be how much can you can do one for without making it unresellable(sp?) i.e. nothing left out that couldn't be easily upgraded at a later stage. Clearly the engine is at the top of that list.
