I had a great return to form last night. I wanted to find out if the inlet manifold gasket leak was internal as well as external. So I planned to
drain a couple of inches of oil from the sump into a jam jar and look to see if it was oil or water. Anyway, I lay on the floor, arm under car, and got to the point of the sump plug being loose enough to turn with fingers, and was holding it carefully so that I didn't get a gush of oil up my arm, when my big socket-set case fell over on the concrete right next to my ear ! This made me jump, pulling the plug clean out and knocking the jam jar over. I ended up with about a pint of oil on the floor and not in the jar. Still... there wasn't any water in it ! So that's ok.

oil on the floor when draining the oil... I remeber it well.

foolishly I forgot it took well over 8 litres and put a 'normal' car drain container under it that takes around 5L......
By the time I realised a huge slick had already formed.
frantic jacking up of the rear end to keep the rear tyres free from the ensuing oil slick followed.

if the engines ran then any water will mix with the oil to form an emulsion. Its light grey/biege in colour and is evident from the dip stick. Dont freak to much if the same gunk is on the inside of the filler cap. it can be a condensation issue on bog v8's when not run to full temp.

don t run the car if you have emulsion instead of oil, it plays hell with your little ends!
