fuel tank repair

The thread on gas smell was timely...

I've discovered if you buy a new tank from Ultima it's £272 + VAT, so that's £640 the pair. Which isn't as bad as I thought but obviously still expensive. So I'm wondering what the alternative repair methods are.

I'm dubious about weld repairs to small holes and seam failures because no welder will touch it until it's defumed. Yet I wonder how the foam will take to that degrease/rinse treatment.

Has anyone had success with epoxy / two part putty coatings on the outside ?

I've no idea what your tank is like but in the past I've had to modify a couple of tanks. After a lot of flushing etc they were opened up, modified/repaired and then put back together.

Not seen it done but was told foam filled tanks can be repaired by TIG welding whilst full of water.
