Has anyone covered the roof with material as opposed to painting as recommended in the build instruction manual?

If so any tips?

I am thinking of leather or alcantara.

Did mine in alcantara medium grey color. 10 years old now and looks new. a point to ponder is what is roof and what is door. We ran the alcantara down to
the bottom of the window . to my eye that looks right setting in the car with the door shut. No right or wrong just something you might not consider until you were done. Lee

Hello,

I glued a single piece of black Alcantara on the roof. It looks very nice and it wasn't a hard job, but it is easy only if the cockip is still an independent part.

Here is the process showing how I did it:

- Turn the cockpit upside-down. Add some support below the front part to avoid bending of the roof bridge.

- Remove the door sealings of the cockpit

- Cut a chablon out of a big piece of paper following the shape to be cover.

- Use the chablon to cut a single piece of Alcantara, 2-3 cm larger than what is needed. A single piece of Alcantara leads to some waste, but the cost of Alcantara is not so high and it makes the job much simpler.

- Scratch and clean the surface of the glass fiber roof to improve the adhesion of the glue.

- Note the centerline of the roof, the center line of the Alcantara piece. Check the positioning and mark another reference mark at the start of the glueing.

- Use the classical contact glue glueing process. I started in the middle of the roof, then did the 4 "arms". It is good to have somebody to hold the parts upwards and avoid any contact.

- Once it is dry, cut the excess of Alcantara with a sharp knife

- Replace the sealings

Job's done!

I 'flocked' mine using a hired electrostatic flocker.

Yes. Considered flocking but I wasn't brave enough to undertake that process.

It was remarkably simple to do. I did mine before bonding the centre section on, I propped it up in a closed garage to minimize drafts, sprayed the glue, connected the flocker to the bodywork and pressed the button.

The nylon flock floated up and embedded itself end on in the glue. I hovered over a location until it was black and moved on. Whole process took no more than an hour. Once dry I hoovered off the excess and it looked fantastic and still does after 10 years. It was very good at covering imperfections as well. I would say it was easier than trying to cut and stick material...
