The temperature in my engine bay is marginal at a standstill and the exhaust is the major problem, has anyone else got this problem ?

I have looked into ceramic exhaust coating from Camcoats and other from a spin off company from the Atomic Research Est, if anyone else is interested perhaps a group buy and discount session could be arranged. Estimated 30-50% reduction in heat
I was thinking DEC/JAN timings

The only trouble is that the heat has to go somewhere and I've heard that it cracks the welds on the system prematurely, same with exhaust wrap.

I take it that you've got the mild steel 'zorts then mate instead of the s/steel jobs?

I have some custom equal length pipes from Primary Designs in Thame ( F1 exhaust makers ) in stainless steel, the silencers are repackable aswell. A work of art!!

Hi, that exhausts sound nice, what are the primary tubes diameter and lenght / and what horse power range are they best at. Would be nice to have a Picture or to If you would not mind.

Got the price off Camcoat for a ceramic coating in Cermakrome good for 750 deg C and a crome like finish

£550 pounds

This includes a black satin internal coat aswell.
I intend to do this in November for

Hmmm.. I was going to order the s/steel ones from Ultima, but at that price, the mild steel with coating would look good and come out at the same price. Was that just to coat the headers or the silencers too?

Over 600BHP you are going to need to coat that exhaust !!. Heat in the engine bay is my biggest problem.
That price was everything !!!! including headers and exhaust boxes

I'm worried that the stuff would start to flake off after 18 months...then rust 10 times worse!!

Provided it lasts I'm definitely interested in going the coated mild steel route though.

Apart from the increased temp specs what is the advantage of the black satin finish on the race spec? Would have thought that with a black finish it would just radiate a bunch of heat into the engine bay...

Hi,
I'm not an expert on thermodynamics or heat transfer, but I've heard the answer to your concerns about the black color somewhere. There are a lot of companies here in the states that will coat exhaust. Jet Hot Coat is one of the most popular www.jet-hot.com/faq.html . Also check out www.performancecoatings.com/headercoatings.html
A lot of these companies have gaurantees of some sort. I think the really critical factor is preparation. At a minimum the exhaust will need to be sand blasted on the outside. This will roughen the surface, which allows the coating to stick, and clean off any rust. However, the pros will also prep the inside of the exhaust as well. Its becoming quite popular here in the states. There are also some products that you can apply yourself, if you have a spray gun, and have the exhaust sand blasted. Assembly is also critical, b/c the coating can be scratched.

The exhausts are chemically cleaned and strayed internally with black satin, then Cermakrome for a shiny alluminium type finish.
Both these ceramics have an excellent rust prevention

Yet the effectiveness of these coatings are not degraded.

Found this comment on Internet: Normal caution in accepting this as gospel.

Do you recommend coating stainless to reduce under hood temperatures?
We built a custom set of headers for a T-70 Lola that was being converted into a “street” car. Due to the tight confines of the engine bay, the owner wanted to try coating the headers to reduce the under hood temps. The owner was fanatical about measuring and recording all engine operating data-he had thermocouples on everything! After coating, he did not see one degree change in the under hood temps.
Another issue is that all coatings will stain if they get oil spilled on them. Bare stainless is nice because maintenance is easy-a scotch bright pad and WD40 on mill finish, blue away and Simi chrome on polished.

Phil
