G50 gearbox internals question!
Discussion
Anyone fully rebuilt their G50? If so, is the main shaft internal bearing an easy to replace item? I am sure that I have slight play in my shaft at the gbox end. The pilot bearing at the flywheel is a new one and seems fine, no play there, but getting slight play on the shaft. Anyone either replaced the bearing (I assume there must be one in there somewhere!) of know how to??
I haven't, but whenever this subject has come up before the advice has always been that DIY is not recommended due to the complexity and special tools required.
I looked into rebuild costs of a shagged box off of eBay and it was looking cheaper just to get another recovered box....

I've rebuilt mine and replaced gears and bearings, it's not an easy job, to replace things at the front of the box you have systamaticly strip it from the back.
There's also lots of ball bearings and small springs to lose in the process. You'll need several pullers and a press, and you need to devise a way of locking the gears together to tighten the big nut on the end.

Not sure about the six speed as i never stripped one, but from memory fifth is in the rear casing which supports the rear bearings for the two shafts and the selector rod. The casing comes off easily and there are no bits to fall out(their all in the middle casing) remove the two end nuts drive out the pin the selector fork and draw of the bearings and gears from the main and layshaft, and i think that's about it!
