I'm giving serious thought to an 1uzfe from a Lexus...
4.0 Litre, 32 valve, all alloy, 6 bolt mains, factory forged crank and rods - and I just picked a complete running engine back home in NZ for £450, at that price, it's worth having a play... even if it just ends up in a jetboat :-)
You can get forged pistons, race cams and various other ancillaries for it... thought, since it was the first V8 Toyota made, they went for a little over engineering... so they are very solid engines...
I think from factory - with no mods at all, they come in at a conservative 260ish bhp, but of course, once a pair of turbos or a blower is hooked up, or some porting done...
They are becomming a very popular conversion engine in Aussie and NZ... you can even get an emissions kit for one from Australia... as well as one with an Eaton hooked up...

Hi John. Thought exactly the same being as I was offered an 18 month old RS6 engine and ancilleries for just £3.5k, having only covered 18,000 miles. The problem is cost of tuning to take it from 460bhp upto 550 and above.
To get near the 600hp you would have to spend around £25k
from one of the reputable Audi tuning firms and you can buy a twin turbo SBC producing 1200hp for around £13k.

The only other viable alternative IMO is the Lexus V8 as mentioned above. You will also see a thread about this mentioned on the Engines forum, do a search for 6 months ago with Audi RS6 or Lexus V8.
What that leaves us with is the good ol' SB Chevy as nothing else £ for ft/lb comes close other than the Luxus

I can see where you are coming from, but I dont want the weight of the chevy engine, so the Audi being all Alloy seems a good, if not great, alternative.
The engine you are refering to is the RS6, and it cant be mated with a manual box on the cheap. That is the V8 which I do agree would be nice, but very expensive.
£5-6k will buy the engine from an RS4, £8k to get the bhp to 500. Using the motec ecu which means I can run the dash too
