That is the question.

I spoke to my engine builder at length today regarding fitting the breather box I have.

Plus we looked around the few cars that were outside the halls (cheers guy).

He said that for every day usage they should not be fitted and even on track days they were not really required.

So why did some of you fit them and others didn't.

Cheers

A crankcase breather is required. Depending on the style of driving that you intend on using and the type of engine.

If you have a low(er) powered engine with only around town type driving, then a simple valve cover mounted breather will be sufficient.

If you have a high(er) powered engine or plan on a slightly more aggressive driving style, then a more substantial system is required.

Engines create an internal pressure created by combustion gasses passing by the piston rings (blow-by) during both the compression and power strokes. If this pressure is not allowed to escape, then this pressure will cause oil leaks and loss of power. Proper evacuation (if not a slight vacuum) will allow the engine to create the intended power and operate more smoothly.

Hi,

The engine will most certainly be a high output unit (between 550 and 600bhp) so from what you have said it's a must.

I'm intending on using the car for trips to work when the weather is right which will be the usual UK commute (stop/start) and also fast road/track days when I can.

If I can I'll get the engine builder to mail me his technical reasoning.

Cheers

another good reason for a tank is when you start up your accusump fires in its oil so you are running for a short while with the engine over full until it recharges, this can cause it to blow a bit out of the breathers .simon
