I'm keen to build a Can-Am but I'm not having much luck finding somewhere close to home to 'set up shop'. I live in a city centre development and have no space to build at or near my flat. Any ideas how I can go about getting started?

Well i moved out of the city, setup home in a little village, and built a 35x16 foot garage. Helps that the wife only has to walk 15 yards to see me, because last year the only time she saw me was when she was handing over the coffee and biscuits.

Moving house isn't an option. I'm wondering if it's possible to hire/rent a garage space somewhere? Has anyone done this? I'd like to get building so I can have a Can-Am for next summer

That's what quite a few people do. I have a workshop that I share with another couple of guys out near Maidenhead. I know that Stig has a similar setup.

It's just a case of keeping your eyes open, and asking around. Farms quite often have spare buildings that you can rent.

Before I started building my CanAm I calculated I'd need space about 3 times the size of the car. That's the car, the body panels, and the 38 boxes of parts that came with it.
Worked out pretty close!!

Jack,

Over here, we have the luxury of being able to order our body panels for delivery when we're ready to fit them, so (in theory) we only need twice the size of the car. Of course, it's nice to have a bit more space to spread out

Either way it takes a *lot* of room to build one of these things...

I'm currently doing the final fit of my sidepods and I'm finding it hard to find room to work in a largeish double garage (with an attic full of Ultima boxes ).

Originally I had planned to build in my single garage but sense prevailed and I was able to borrow my parents double garage for the summer... I have till the end of Oct to get it transportable!

Borrowing space from friends/relatives is a lot easier when you show them a picture of what it is you are planning to build.... Building an Ultima isn't too messy (so far anyway) just lots of aluminium swarf and glassfibre dust so you shouldn't have too many odd oil or paint stains to explain away after the build.

Indeedy, although I was lucky enough to rent a workshop that was only about 400 yards away from my house! Before that, it was a 15 minute drive away.

Farms are definitely a good bet and you can often get some damn good deals on (ahem) cash rental.
