I'd imagine with the LS7 coming out, maybe a few tuners will come out with an supercharger package.

With added head work and cams, maybe it'll make 800-900hp output.

IMHO, an SC package will be nicer than a twin turbo ie. more linear power delivery, slightly less problems with heat, less need for custom piping and extra parts eg. blow-off valves, wastegates etc.

Maybe it'll be less than USD20k?

Wishful thinking ....

I've already started mine but only just. I have ls7 heads and a cast aluminium intake that's nearly finished which will accept boost. It's been made to suit the ls7 ports and fixtures. So the top ends pretty well sorted. The bottom end will be darton but with my own low comp pistons and titanium rods to suit. I'll use a wet sump. I'm planning to use turbos but could easily use a supercharger.

wow nice setup. what's your displacement again? 427?

how much hp are you going for with your twin turbo setup?

may i ask briefly what's your opinion on twin turbo setup vs supercharger?

boosted ls1,

just had a look at your website and i must say that your ls7 hybrid package is very interesting.

what hp ranges are we talking about say for a twin turbo setup and also supercharger setup?

also does your establishment offer any sort of a warranty?

thanks

Hi Boomerkk,

The horsepower will really depends on the boost used and I like to get the compression quite low. I expect something starting at around 800 odd bhp but I'm being speculative here. The figures will increase with pressure and rpm's. I like to use stockish rpm's for obvious reliability reasons. With boost you don't really need to many revs to make healthy progress. It will be a Darton 427 block and I can improve on the LS7 internals.

Warranty is always a minefield with a boosted engine but I back things like my build quality and workmanship plus quality of parts used. I wouldn't warranty for things like cracked or detonated pistons. You can pm me about this if you like.

Mike, u got email.

For the rest of you guys, I would like to invite comments on this hypothetical engine:

using a build like what Mike is building - 427ci Darton MID, lowered comp, forgies, head and cam work etc but using a twin screw supercharger eg. Whipple or Kenne-Bell.

The target output is in the high 800s - 900hp range.

many thanks

it would be do-able, but you would need to use a 3.3ltr whipple, as the 2.3 will be too small/require too many revs! also be nice to see a Procharger on there. with a 427 there will be loads of low down torque anyway so a fixed displacement blower may be a little to harsh at lower rpms. also the simple ProCharger would be cheapper and could use the turbo manifold (ie injection) and easier to rig a cooler of some sort in the system.

very good ideas though!

thanks Chris

Boomerkk,

I'd go with stock ls7 heads, they really are good. Cam and valvetrain would be custom though.

Mike, thanks for the email.

I'm really interested in the TT 427 you're building for a fellow forummer (ultima can-am, if im not mistaken). Do let us know the progress.

I think your customer is going to use it in a race situation (correct me if i am wrong).

Will do. I got my first ls7 intake flanges back today so I'll mail you a pic later if you're interested. I may need an ordinary email address.

I can't do that Steve, I'm a techno nurd! I can mail them to somebody for uploading. Anybody want to upload them? These are the basic flanges fitted to a head from which I can fabricate just about anything The plenums done but will need trumpets.

Thanks for the upload Builder,

These castings are straight from machining and need some fettling prior to machining the injector holes and fuel rail mounts. This all depends on the intended application, number/type of injectors. I can add nitrous and use forced induction.

After that I can weld them onto the central plenum, install carbon trumpets, carbon lid & fit throttle/s Or I may go twin plenum like the C5R.

You are welcome. That looks great. Just curious; why not use an LS7 block?

I will probably go with the LS7 crate engine right out of the box. My guess is that 505/470 will hold me for a while -- until I learn to drive the car. Then, when aftermarket parts become available, I can start to modify...new cam, solid-roller, low comp forged pistons and a ProCharger with modest boost.

Well, I should have polished the inlet flange first and set it against a nicer back ground but I wanted to get it posted

As for the LS7 block it been made to very exact tolerences and heat treatments etc and we know it's an endurance piece but from what I've seen LSX blocks aren't a weak componant although the ls2 is weaker.

Originally I would have loved a C5R block but not now. I've seen atmo lsx engines with cracked liners. I've also seen a scrap C5R block. Get some detonation and the thin walled liners can't take it, period. They crack. So for a boosted application the Darton MID is my intention. I already know the lsx block is strong, it's the liners that are weak. The MID wet liners are quite thick and could be replaced if one gets damaged. At the same time I can build up using custom forged pistons instead of the ls7 cast items. They also won't sustain boost as they will have been designed for light weight and to a specific power goal. I have no doubt the ls7 engine is going to be a benchmark piece of kit but a bespoke Darton/ls7 hybrid will be better if you want to use boost at some stage. you can still use titanium rods and ls7 heads.

I'm now a darton agent and this is because I'm convinced it's the way to go. If you look around my site you will find some interesting information re the Darton MID liners.

Atmo, ls7 will be just great. Blown and you need a total rebuild/rethink.

Aha, going the SC route I see What's your target hp with the ProCharger onboard?
Transaxle ideas? IMO that'll be the limiting factor esp. when torque exceeds 600lb/ft.

It still looks good. I can imagine what it will look like all polished up. Sweet!

Logical. After speaking with one of the original design engineers (you might know Steve @ Race Engine Development), my concerns over the MID systme were less. I would consider it, if my build was aimed at max-effort.

Best of luck with your engine development. I will be very interested in seeing the results and hope you will post them here.
