I'm seriously considering a GTR and looking at various things.

I see in the forum regular mention of chunterring idle and occasional flatspots on the higher powered motors (600+)/ Excuse my ignorance, but hasn't anyone fitted a decent set of throttle bodies and ECU to these motors and really fettled the mappings - carbs are a bit 'dynosaur' aren't they? What's up?

I'm happy to help anyone that's interested in fitting Megasquirt to one.

I've seen the amount of work you had to put into the conversion. Is there an over the counter solution for someone who just wants to bolt it on?

You can buy pre-built megasquirt kits (Ive got one i'm building for a mate in front of me now), but you would still need sort the manifold, plumbing and wiring out. You could get get a specialist to do it, but it would cost a lot more money.

The reason I chose MS, was the whole DIY nature of it. Until a few years ago I thought injection was a black art best left to experts - but MS explodes that myth and gives enthusiasts the chance to learn first hand - If that's what floats your boat.

If you want a bolt-on solution, one of the more mainstream systems installed by dealer would be more suitable. Given that its a chevy, it should't be too difficult to find someone on the UK. I can think of a couple of contacts already.

Holley/Edelbrock do bolt-on kits, but no-one really seems to rate them.

Eliot.

I don't have a problem building the kit assuming it is a bare board and kit of components nor with the plumbing and wiring it's just the machining and welding of the manifold which I don't have the facilities to do.
Did you produce any drawings I could hand to a local machine shop?

I looked into this last year. I lot of the inlet manifolds now have been pre marked for injector drillings. If you find a suitable system let me know!

Nice one Guy. will have a troll around the american suppliers and see what I can find.
Eliot had to machine bosses and weld them into a manifold to create the material to support the injector but it is simple to include that material at the casting stage.

What sort of manifold do you run on the Ult's?
Is it dual plane or the big single plane - al-la victor jnr?

I'm pretty sure you can find the manifold with injectors in it (I need to search around a bit today) as for the throttle body, you dont need to go to all the trouble i did with the carb - you can get a 4 barrel throttle body (in the UK!) for less than £100

I'll see what i can search out, but late for work now!

Here's some research ive done this am:
Edelbrock:
www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/efi/efi_manifolds_chevy.shtml
Although I would ensure that the manifold suits the characteristics of your engine. Use the same
selection critera that you would use for a carb manifold. I put a Vic Jnr on mine and it affected
low end torque.

Holley seem to have some suiteable candidates with fuel rails:
www.holley.com/types.asp?type=506

Autonomics throttle body
www.auto-nomics.com/cgi-bin/showresults?a=detail&part=10850-002-D
this saves converting a carb.

(Bill Shurvinton sells these in the UK, he can be found on the megasquirt_uk yahoo group)

Keep an eye out on ebay, for an old holley manifold setup

The TPI would be an easy swap, but they dont suit higher revving engines found in ultimas. there
all done by 5500 rpm.

This chap in the US converts manifolds to EFI
www.hotrodsolutions.net/IntakesEFI.html
I used his pictures for the basis of my conversion.

This guy claims to do manifold conversions, although he nicked the photo from my site!
www.americanv8engines.co.uk/?Products.
I have met him - nice guy. He's doing a conversion on a big block to port injection - worth dropping him a line, he's got megaquirt and
edis8 parts in stock. As well as the nice Ross fuel rail.

Probably more, but that should give you something to chew on. The holley manifold looks promising.

Good value on throttle body! I spent £200 buying a Holley billet 1000 cfm item from US off ebay which was still not a bad deal. I have a World Products Motown manifold on its way for my recently resurrected Megasqurt Project. Has cast in flats above runners for easy nitrous or EFI mod. Plan is to drill and use epoxy-in machined injector pockets to avoid distorting manifold by welding. Will not be throwing out the Performer RPM and Holley quite yet though.....
IMO the Holley carb on SBC, although old tech, is highly developed old tech, and actually works very well for everything except emissions if set up right .

I have an American Speed engine that we replaced the carb with a Holley Commander 950 Fuel Injection System. The kit came complete with everything except the fuel pump for the conversion and is laptop tuneable. It seems to me I spent less than $2500. I've only had the car on the road for a month but so far our base tuning has been good. Hope this helps.....

the topic of fuel injection seems to go on and on ,having had the car on the road for 2 years i have to admit the one thing i hate is the crap fueling its a 19 century problem in a 21st century car ,so saturday i have a meeting with dave walker of emerald do discuss fuel injection and mapable ignition ,we are going to run the car on the rolling road to see where thre problems are , i was going to go for ignition only but dave seems to think that the most cause of the problem is the carb so will have to wait to see what saturday brings .simon

Well said! After running the Emerald on my Seven these carb's are a pain in the rear!

I've already swapped from a totally useless Elderbrock to a proper race spec Holley and it's still a pile of pants compared to injection. Keed us informed what Dr Dave says..

You might try some of these links. You will find about 20 companies that do EFI systems here. Scrole down to Engine, then EFI...

hi mrloudly, spent 2 years fighting with carbs been a pain in the arse if it was just down to performance it would not be such a problem as the car is awsome flat out ,but round town its a pain dr dave has been well recommended so i am keen to meet up with him ,looking forward to his opinion ,like the look of the auto-nomics throttle assembly, will be a interesting project for the winter !!!

auto-nomics throttle assembly

$75.00 That must be a mistake surely!!!!

I can't believe there's not a million conversion kits available for the SBC style lumps. Jeez think of the market size!!

Dr Dave is one of the most switched on engine guru's I've ever met! He's a wizard with injection systems specially Carls!!!
