Starter

Twice today have had starter problems.
Had a graunch when starter engaged but it went on to start OK. Next time got the same graunch then the starter just spun. Rocked it in gear to turn the engine a little then it turned over and started.

Question. Is the starter pre-engage or throw in?

If pre-engage then I probably have a dead spot on the ring gear requiring a strip out of the box and flywheel off.
If its throw in then it could be sticking and just need a clean.

Needless to say I'm hoping it's the later.
I have checked, and no, it's not come adrift.

therre was a thread on this a while ago, try going to search and look for "starter ring" in the last 12 months. My experience was that the starter motor gear was not getting tight enough in to the ring and that the starter motor could do with moving forwards along its axis a few mm, solved with a file!!!

This evenings investigation found 2 teeth missing from the ring gear.
So, 'box out, new ring gear and new starter.

Did you have the right starter to begin with?

I think that has happened to a couple of other owners. Turned out the the number of teeth on the starter ring gear were different to what it should be?!

That may cause excessive wear but I doubt it would break teeth off. Just in case, I'm getting one of the new design starters.

still think you should check the wear on the teeth of both the starter and the ring to see if they are engaging sufficiently to guarantee a solid and secure drive

Will be doing that when the new bits go in.
