In the process of taking out the engine and transaxle on the CanAm at the moment. Has anyone adapted the starter to make it easier to remove. Am I right in thinking you have to disconnect the transaxle move it back, remove the clutch and flywheel, remove the adapter plate just so you can get the starter out. Or does the upper stud unscrew from the adapter plate, in which case the starter comes straight out.

Its the Getrag 6 speed transaxle.

Hi Dave,

I have the Getrag-6 as well. The starter goes in with two bolts that, if my memory serves me correctly, are easily accessed without removing the transaxle. My starter goes in from the engine side. I think one bolt connects through to the adapter plate only, and one goes all the way through to the transaxle, but you should be able to remove the starter without removing the engine or the transaxle.

I may be wrong, since I haven't done the "starter-only" removal, but if you want me to dive in under the car and check, I can do so.

Hi Craig

I took the starter out this morning but did have to remove all that I mentioned. Mine is located with one stud fitted into the adapter plate in the upper position and one bolt in the lower position that bolts through the plate and transaxle. The stud stops it from being removed because the other bolt postion is stuck between the adapterplate and the sump. I also noticed in your video that your transaxle was fitted after the engine. I tried to remove mine yesterday but it will not come out rearwards. I hope my starter never fails!

I would be interested if anyone else has a starter mounted the same as mine.

Maybe the factory could tell me if mine is different than it should be.

Regards Dave

Just looked on your site Craig and realised it's the sump pan. You have a dry sump I do not. Your adapter plate looks the same as mine. Maybe I'll adapt the sump while I have the engine out. It would make any future starter problems much easier to fix.

Still like to know how you got the transaxle in though.

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,

I've got the same starter as you have and can confirm that it's impossible to remove it without taking off the adaptor plate!! As I found to my cost after I realised that I couldn't even get the hot post wired up with it in after patting myself on the back for remembering to install the starter when fitting the adaptor plate for the first time!

The trouble is, whilst it's pretty easy to remove the bolts, the sump wings will stop you from withdrawing the starter backwards. You'd have to modify the sump to be able to do this.

Then again, having removed and refitted it twice in as many days, maybe it's not such a bad idea?

Regarding your transaxle, daft question, but are you sure you've removed all the bolts? There's a 19mm bolt underneath that's easy to miss. Providing they're removed along with the rear cradle, it will come out. It will just require some elbow grease

Hi Stig

Thanks for the confirmation about the starter. I might modify the sump when I rebuild the engine.

I had to take the transaxle out once I had removed the engine. So it went forward and up instead of backwards. I tried moving the transaxle into different positions but it did not want to come out backwards. The measurement of the chassis hole is smaller than the diameter of my Getrag box. Do you know if the factory altered the chassis at any time?

Dave, - not sure what you mean about the chassis 'hole'?

Brave man putting the engine and trans in as one piece Gotta be very careful that you don't bash the rear bulkhead GRP! :yes)

Hi Stig

By "Hole" I mean the measurement between the top and bottom chassis sections. The measurement is smaller than that of the transaxle bellhousing. I'd be interested to know what the internal measurement of your top and bottom chassis sections is, mine measures 353mm. The box measures 359mm.

I took the engine out first, then the transaxle, not together!

Ah - that.

You're right, you have to tilt the transaxle to get it out, it won't come straight back.
