Well - the wait has ended!
The red truck arrived on the 20th Friday in the morning as promised, and I had to play hookie from work and hi-tail it back to my place to give the driver a helping hand and to salivate over the truck contents!

Ooooohhhh - there she was! - my own personal Ultima chassis ......and then it dawned on me!
Now it is a never-ending battle with the other half, making up excuses to sneak into the garage of an evening hoping she doesn't notice! - Yeah Right! That is not going to pass the non-divorce proliferation plans!

Soo, to more subtle plans....right you lot out there, heres your chance to really help! Come up to the the podium and offer your wisdom with some unique excuses in this thread that I and others can list in the 'Darling - I am only popping out for a minute!' Book of excuses for later use! Com'on, you know you have had to use them yourself- so don't be shy!

Honey, I've taken a new second job that I could do at home just to stay close with you ând does win us a lot of money...
She will say; ow darling what sweet and good of you, taking a second job while thinking on me and do the work at home...what job is it? and do we have anough room to do the job? and do we win a lot??
Your answer; Yes honey it all fits in our garage, look at this Ultima list, when I build this car myself, I save a lot money! So you can do more shopping
She will answer; Oh darling, your the best and oh so clever...

I have to say, old chap - that I really do get nerked what someone says they married a petrol-head! -

They say Love is blind - and its true, you don't get to ask the right questions in time before cupid does his dastardy deed, and you find yourself sitting at your own reception with a drink in one hand, and a ring on the other!

Needless to say - I am envious! - but wouldn't swap mine for the world!

Just put your foot down and tell her who's the boss, then rig up a bell from the garage to the kitchen and tell her one ring for coffee and two rings for a sandwich.

If my wife ever reads this, my car will be for sale as I will be a dead man

Good luck with the build

I've found the stealth method very effective; all I have to do is wake up at 3 in the morning and sneak out into the garage then get back in as the kids wake up. The majority of my EFI conversion has used this approach and I just use the excuse of not being able to sleep, you know work is on my mind.

Do what I did..... suggest she gets an evening job, then put the kids to bed early and away you go

When she gets in and asks what you did just say "just watched the telly and fell asleep waiting for you to come home darling". That leaves you justified in also spending some of the weekend also in the garage

Great idea.... but when I tried to put it in effect I ended up with the bell in the garage

Just don't tell her I removed the batteries

Reverse psychology that’s the trick, just say you can't be arsed to go into the garage tonight rather stay in here with you and watch telly……….then wait for her to say 'If you think you've spent all that money on 'bits' and you're not going to build it, then think again.'
Mind you I have been building for over a year now, so might need refining a bit!!!!

Congrats. Yep at the end of the day it just cost money. It should be part of your original budget. I sent 'she who must be obeyed' on a 3 month ski instructors course in Canada. Expensive but hey so was the car.

Crazy

Building an ultima is much cheaper than the lights outside your house. Must have a small power station to keep them going!

Only just managed to stop a plane landing on the drive last night. Had an offer from Heathrow for use as new runway.

So it's not just me that noticed the prototype T5 runway

This thread should be upgraded to include a rating for said excuse to indicate how many hours of build time it would afford. This would make a handy scoring system for the “excuse-o-meter”.
Maybe something like

Storing parts in the living room, after a week she would be begging you to get on with the build, - ratting 1hr of build time a day.

Or whenever you finish up in the shed, bring the next part that is to be installed in with you and leave it on the kitchen table…..

On second thoughts, Cancel all of that I don’t think it would work for long!

For the statistics you should include the number of wives that did NOT survive the building.

Don't forget her last words so we can recognise them. And take action if we please.

Remember mine is delivered in wk 15

Cheers Joop

Well Guys,

I did not know what I started!

Obviously some of you are Past-Masters at the blarney!

For me, I am having to do the running-in Method:

1. -Say you will only do one or two nights a week Honest Injun - get an acknowledgement (probably the best you will get!)
2. -Do an hour stint on the first coming in early, smiling and say 'Well honey-bun I thought I would rub/massage your feet now and tell you what I have done! - (Spousal smile!)
3. -Second night - say 'If you don't mind Darling I need to check what I have done and perhaps finish what I started? - (Spousal murmour - butyou are out the door in double-quick time!)
4. - Come in before 9:30 and say - well I didn't want to be out there for two long Darling as I really want to spend time sitting with you watching telly! - (Spousal look of disbelief!)

Keep this up gradually extending the time out there!

Finally - Is this site the domain of the Male frternity, or are there any female builders out there who can give us a better insite and guidance?
