Personal experience is fine, but it would be wise not to suggest or imply to others that it'll be ok. Too many variables, offer a caveat of personal responsibility and leave it at that. Isn't the saying that when the laywers get richer society becomes poorer?

I use Bose Series X Aviaiton ANR (Active Noise Reduction) headsets....and an intercom. The ANR is amazing and I'd recomend everyone try this technology at least once. I use them for several reasons....to protect my already poor hearing....it does make having a conversation MUCH easier....and I opted not to install speakers and run my CD through the intercom...although I've never listened to music in the GTR. I should add that my company sells these (not an advertisement) so my cost was substanially lower than the $1000 each retail price. Having said all that..... I don't use them most of the time (they are illegal on the street here) but mostly on a long drive. Just my two cents.

An advanced motorcyclist once told me that certain earplugs can be acquired which filter out harmful frequencies and still allow speech to be heard. Now some bikers are known to tell a tall tale or ten so don't hold me to it. Earplugs are a bit icky but better than needing a hearing aid before your time, or just sod it and (potentially) go deaf. You just have to learn to live with any consequences. I'll admit I don't always use them when I should so perhaps a headset is the most convenient option.

Okee, when I was at the factory,
I did not use the opportunity, given to me by Ted,
to go for a drive. (Several own reasons)
So I can only react on what I Read/Hear/Feel/Know.
But having heard the tuned BMW M5 V8 at 7800 rpm
on the testbench last wednesdayevening.
I was thinking, what to do..........
Even with fingers in my ears, it was an incredibel (beautifull) noise.
Think the high rev's make a different decibels.
Of course I know a bit enginesound is half the fun.
Short trips, WWOOWW, but on a 1h+ trip I recon this is a bit much.
Don't forget I am a middle-aged man, becoming 46 march 5th,
first wife, 2 young kids, 2 cats, 1 empty space in the garage,
who has to wait for 12 llooooonnggg weeks.
Happy to tease myself in the meanwhile,
with parts delivered by the man from TNT.
Who is already waving to me (on the 3th floor)
when he is approaching my office .
And having his little sharp knife ready to open packages
after me flying of those last steps and scratching on that paper.
When I was young I liked a lot of sound/noise.
But when driving my racingcar nowadays,
I am really happy to use earplugs.
Have the specially made plugs you describe Mhussa and they are really good.
But you do not easiely plug them in when driving.
Drove a rallycar with a headphone system once
but was not impressed by the quality.
Could not hear much of a voice but the noise was gone.
Thinking about it, maybe I should buy them:

Joop, what you've said is true and from a posing perspective they aren't very good at all, for local driving they do look a bit "much". From my own experience longer journeys are definitely harder and tiring especially at higher speeds with wind/tyre/engine noise. If I was going for it I'd rather it was quieter so I could concentrate on the driving than the sounds the motor is making. It all comes down to personal preference and what "image" you want to project. 
The bose sets which brad has suggested certainly look the best and with the kind offer he has made makes them even more attractive. Maybe the factory should revise its recommended headset supplier
(remember health'n'safety and all that).
