Hi Guys,

Another chance for you honorable experts out there to give some guidance to us novices!

I have seen references to these LS alternative units in threads here, but to-date I am not clear on the pros and cons between them.

Maybe there is a web-site somewhere that gives a history?

Any one out there help me understand the difference and specifically what it may mean in the context of an Ultima build (road and track)in the UK?

If you go for an LS engine you will need to run a "cat" on the exhaust, this is the reason 99% of people stick to the old SBC running an early 1970's block to overcome this rule. Now this may or may not have been done before but you take yourself away from a factory exhaust/help. Not forgetting engine mount, wiring looms, adapter plates etc.

Still it can be done ... you need to decide on the power you want, then choice the ls crate engine which best matches your requirements

Keith,

A quick summary:

1. You can get engine mount adaptors so that the LS engine will bolt up to the SB mounts.
2. You'll need to get the PCM reflashed to run as a "stand alone" so that it is not looking for inputs from devices and sensors etc that are not there. I had 30-odd spare wires on my harness that were removed.
3. You'll need to sort out an exhaust....myself and Bob (LS2ultima) are looking into getting some made in OZ and using his car to jig from. Stay tuned.
4. I have been told that you have to use a G50 box - Getrag wont work.

I would recommend talking to someone in the UK that does LS swaps, I would specifically look for someone that knows about Ultimas AND LS engines.... like Mike (boosted)www.chevroletls1.com/

You can also look on www.ls1tech.com/forums/ where there is a wealth of information.

As for the differences in LS1, LS2, LS6, LS7... best to search www.ls1tech.com/forums/

I'd recommend searching this and Ls1tech forums and read all that you can.

I know we have a picture gallery but what would be even more useful for anyone exploring this forum to compliment this with a special register of Ultima owners and their projects, built and those being built, with specs such as their engine/ gearbox choice etc etc etc, especially specs which are...

............... not the norm! !!!!!!!

This would certainly help us newbees identify what is possible, and also point us in the right direction if the owner is willing to discuss their experiences.

Could be a sticky! What do you think Stig?

Anyone in the UK done an LSx conversion? Which engine? and where from?

Anyone already been through the SVA and emissions tests with Lsx and Cats?

Try HP books “Chevy LS1/LS6 Performance” by Christopher Endres ISBN 1-55788-407-2 I found this one of the best reference books on this around. Also chech out Mach edition of Chevy High Preformance. They have a great article on Building stroked LS1 to 402CI..
I plan to use this engine in use this in conjunction with a cable change G50 in a spider chassis I acquired recently.

Does anybody know why Getrag wont work with an LSx engine? Is it a dimension problem or because no adapter exists? Missing adapter could be probably solved by doing a custom job, I was told...
