Red GTR spotted in Westbourne
Discussion
Hello 454,I have a 434 Knight Racing Services motor in my Ultima although I never intended to go that route.I started of with a 377 project in mind but things changed and the opportunity arose to build said variant and the metamorphosis began. As the project nears completion I still can't help wondering if I have gone the right way. What made you decide to go large?
Much like yourself I have spent a lot of time going over the different options and the age old dilema of revs vs grunt.
My previous car was a Skyline GTR which is a low torque, high revs engine relying on a lot of boost for power. I have also had a few sports bikes over the years which are all about the revs to get lots of power.
Both these toys were great on the drag strip or runway but were hard work on a twisty if you wanted to really lay the power down.
I ride a Triumph Speed Triple now and it's got loads of torque everywhere, regardless of gear or revs, when you crack open the throttle you've got everything it will give, I really like it compared with having to crack down 3 gears to access the full potential of the engine.
Although any SBC in an Ultima will have lots of grunt I guess this has made me swing towards a really torquey engine with a few less revs where I can really feel that grunt rather than a revver which may be slightly quicker against the stopwatch in a straight line.
The other thing that swung me was the potential for more power later, my aim was always 600 horsepower and my engine will hit this without being highly stressed. Later if I wish to go play with the bigger boys I can add a blower or some Nitrous and push up to 800 or so with the knowledge that the base engine is built to handle it rather than being maxed out already.
It's all horses for courses and I'm sure that a revvy 377 is amazing as it screams past 7500rpm
I guess revs just aren't my thing any more.
Apologies for the ramble but it's not an easy thing to sum up in a couple of lines
