One for the electricians out there.

As I see it, the ignition swich I have from the factory, has only two positions, off and run (start is not connected as this is buttoned). How have people catered for the acc position for things that you wouldn't want perm live like audio, sat nav etc?

Cheers

Good question...... Was just about to wire in all my accessories.

One way to do it is to put a "secret switch" inline to the ignition circuit (and fuel pumps etc) and that way you can turn off all but the accessories.

Alternatively (obviously) a three position key switch. Here's a 4 position one www.lma-group.com/motorsport/LMACatalogueSection7.pdf ... demontweeks stock LMA switches but cant tell online whether this is one that they sell.

Ta Crafty,

No-one's seen a three position - i.e. without start?

This is exactly what I came up against last week when wiring my gearknob start button, confused the hell out of us first off, but now it's all wired up to the Ultima 2 position ign switch. I tried to look for a three position switch at the Kent show but the ones I saw didn't look like they could handle the juice that would be going through it. I seem to remember a post on here about 'hot ign switches' and by all accounts the latest ones from Ultima are better. (allbeit only 2 position)
I only have a radio, and everyone I have mentioned this to have come back with 'when are you going to listen to the radio or come to that hear it'

If you are using a start button you may want to wire it so the key also has to be in the start position. In this configuration anybody not in the know will find it won't turn over on the key nor the button.
It works, as the factory found out, when I left it there for SVA. They had to push it into the workshop and ask me the next day.

That's quite cunning Steve!

I think I might just perm wire it and just train myself to turn it off!

I would think that the 4 position is the easiest solution..... see if you get a 3 position (say on-off-on) you'll need to work out how to have the ign connected to one of the "on" positions and the acc connected to both..... The standard 4 position is made for this.

Cunning, yes - but with that configuration, what's the point in having the button??? Starting the car becomes a two handed affair?

technically it is in the std config..... turn key with right hand, push starter with left?

I'd definatelly not perm wire your aux in, you only have a tiny battery and there will be no margin for a forgetful moment....and they are not easy to push start.
If your really stuck, use a relay.

Why do people have a start button anyway when starting by the key is so much quicker and more convenient?

(pedant mode) Ah, but the way Steve's done it means having to do it simultaneously, as you have to hold the key over to the 'start' position surely?

Each to their own I guess, as I said, cunning, but seems a bit - well, weird

actually it begs the question... why have the key at all?

Don't say for security as it adds almost nothing compared to a decent alarm.

With my start button I turn the key all the way to 'start' which activates the button then release, I then have 8 secs in which to start the engine or the button deactivates its self. I have a box of tricks that controls all this, I even have an option for the start button to control another function after the engine has started (horn, radio, wipers or washers etc) I haven't gone for another option though. But what it does give me,is peace of mind that when the engine is running the starter cannot be activated again by accident, the starter cannot be activated even with the ign switched on.

That said Andy, the newer ignition barrels have a nicer key!

Take your point about why have one at all though. I probably wouldn't have bothered with the door locks either, but they were already fitted to my doors during the pre-fit.

The Can-Am is a bit overkill (if you can do such a thing) security wise, with removable wheel, CAT1 alarm/immobiliser with shock/proximity detection - not to mention other immobilsation bits and bobs Thought it best given the ICE install and it being a ragtop!
