EFI conversion of carbed SBC and emissions

Would it be possible to pass the UK SVA\MOT emissions test through prudent use of EFI based fuel and spark maps, without the need for cats?

I am thinking of purchasing a second hand SBC engine but it will be subject to current emissions testing. I would like to avoid cats if at all possible. The engine is currently carbed - I would look to convert to EFI and will go the Mega Squirt route. I was thinking of having switchable maps e.g. low emissions and, of course, performance.

any thoughts would be most welcome.

I think the cats come in at a certain engine year rather than having them to achieve an emission figure.

Doesn't it depend on the age of the engine hence why some people want older chevy's and carbs/carb.

If you go efi you can set it lean at the flick of a switch or laptop if you haven't got a hand held.

Like the others have said it depends on the age of the engine. Cats became legal necessity in 1992. If the engine your looking to buy is older than that then I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem. You would only then need to comply with the emissions requirements for the year of your engine.
