Please help. I've recently purchased a GTR which does not want to turn over when hot. Recently rebuilt Chevy SB 383 with 8:1 compression, supercharged. The Porsche starter works well when cold, but when hot, it gives up. I frequently get stranded, and have to take jumper cables with me, and let it cool down before restarting. I have tried heat shielding the starter today, but that did not make a difference. I thought I would order a gear reduction type starter, but the guys at Renegade Hybrids who work on these Porsche transaxles with Chevy SB all the time say that I can not use any other starter with G50-03 because the long reach the starter has into the flywheel? Any more torque and I will tear up my ring gear?? or flywheel?? Sorry for the ignorance. The only option they have is to send my transaxle to them to modify the bellhousing, and change internals to make gear reduction starter work properly. They recommended a taller 4th and 5th gear anyway to provide lower rpms at speed. They want about $5500 for the job. Yikes!! Does anyone have any other options or opinions here? I can't live with the car not starting every time I stop! Thanks in advance!!

Dave

There have been problems with the smaller wire from the battery to ign switch, and also problems with the ign switch. A telltale sign will be the ign switch getting hot.

Try getting the car hot, then hotwiring from the battery +ive main to the solenoid and see if that works. If it does, change the main wires from the battery to the ign switch and upgrade the ign switch.

You should look at the AC wiring also.... main wires to AC fan can get very hot.

Search this forum and you will find more on this.

I wouldn't have thought that would have an effect, the solenoid either gets enough current to close or not. If the starter is turning over (all be it slowly), then the problem isn't the ignition wiring.

Hey david,

My name´s Lutz. I own a GTR. I had similar problems even with my non-charged LS6. In my case the source of error was the earth wiring for the gearbox/engine (big black one, usually on passengers side, from Gear box to chassis).
I riveted the earth conductor to the chassis but there was no proper contact, so the starter didn´t get proper earth and so couldn´t supply full power. Secondly it was a problem of the battery. I replaced the odysses 16 AH with a VARTA (No. 545 155 034 2082, 45 AH, L 238mm W 129mm H 227mm). It fits perfectly, is only 1 kg plus in weight but supplies a 45 AH, which is nearly 3 times the oddysses.... These changes made, my engine starts perfectly in al conditions yet.

It might be necessary to get a starter motor with more power, because your engine is charged....My advice is the Porsche 964 RS Cup Starter Motor. It supplies a 3,3 PS(german horse power , 1 PS = 736 Watt) and fits in your G50 03 without changes. If you need help to purchase it, i´ll help you as I live in germany in Stuttgart, which is by chance the city, porsche´s located. But I tell you, this starter motor is quite expenisve, as it is a porsche racing part and quite rare....

Hope I could help you..

Lutz

A more powerful starter should not be necessary as the compression is only 8.1 and therefore should be easier for the starter to turn but the earth situation is worth looking at and it may be an idea to run one not only from the engine but the gearbox too.

Can sympathise - I get the dreaded starter heat soak too. Make you look like a right plonker. I've an old model Sport and I've heard there are updated starters out there from the factory - how old is your GTR?

Gear reduction seems the way to go... also I found this place that fab their own porsche starters but have not got any details thus far..

Hey Rene,

The famous yellow one is owned by a guy near saarbrücken. I know him and visited him few weeks ago. Mine is the "famous" second TÜV-approved-German-GTR, Ebonyblack Pearl-effect finish, magnolia-white-leather interiour. And I´m proud to say, that this one is much more properly built and well-engineered as the yellow one....The yellow-one owner agrees with me in that point :-)

Have you got any photos? Are you running an LS engine?

Hi Crafty,

I do have Photos. If you like to see them, I can mail you some.
I run a "Head&Cam-Package" LS6 Engine (approx. 480-500PS),
converted to german road needs, meaning OBD II, 4 Lambda,Electric Throttle......
We engineered our own alt.mounts (low drivers side), AC Comp. Mounts (low pass. side),
laminated a complete new shape of the Dash Board, fitted a proper Windscreen
Ventilation Channel, a removable Carbon-Fibre instrument panel.....So a lot
of changes....

Hi Lutz,

I´m also interested in pics of your modifications.
I am the builder of the (not yet finished) German GTR with the
BMW V8.
Maybe Sven mentioned my car.
