Was wondering if anyone knows the procedure for importing a crate engine from the States into the UK. I have made contact with a supplier over there but they have not provided me with a definitive cost for the import duties etc. They have quoted for the supply and delivery of the engine to Heathrow Airport. Do I need to appoint a handling agent to deal with the necessary paperwork and import charges, or is this something that I could easily deal with? My understanding is that VAT @ 17.5% and import duty of 2.7% will be payable on this type of import. Is this correct? confused

Those numbers sound about right for the custom fees. American Speed use BAX Global to ship their engines. I got them to do all of the customs stuff as well (for a fee). Might be worth having a chat with them to find out costs, etc.

They picked up from AS in Moline, IL and delivered it to their nearest office (Prestwick Airport in my case).

Thanks Dave. Will give them a call. Will also find out who SDPC2000 use as their shippers and get in touch with them.

M3, I have a contact who is very useful. Your supplier ships to a NY address (some do it as part of the deal) and they consolidate the parts into one shipment and handle all duty and VAT etc. And can deliver this end.

Email me through profile if you are interested. I've found them very useful if the supplier includes free mailing/fixed cost shipping withing the states.

Bax advised me to get the supplier to put Bournemouth airport as the port of entry. They said that using a provincial airport the import duties and taxes would be lower. The delivery came into Heathrow and onto a bonded truck down to Bournemouth. That was where the delivery ended so I then paid Bax to deliver to me. There may be an airport local to you to make a similar arrangement.
Search for an earlier post on here as I broke out all of the delivery and tax costs for my engine bits import.

Thanks Steve & Phil for the advice.thumbup I live approx 12 miles from Heathrow airport so it would probably be the best point of entry from a convenience point of view, even if it is more costly.

Phil, as suggested by you, my intended supplier SDPC2000 do offer free delivery within continental USA and yours may be an option worth considering for me, as I have not yet started the build process (or ordered my kit yet) and therefore have the luxury of being flexible with shipment times. SDPC2000 have quoted me $595 to ship to Heathrow (or $690 to ship to my door) - Don't know how that would compare with your contact.

Cheers
Greg
