Full Cage on a Can Am
Discussion
Hey guys,
Have been thinking about saftey during a roll over in a Can Am. Not sure yet if the standard rear rool bar would be sufficient to keep you safe in a roll over, especially at speed. So I started thinking about a custom full cage that can be partially removable. This way you have the best of all worlds, standard rear roll bar for crusing, maybe the addition of a front hoop that follows the arc of the full windshield that can be removed, and some additional cross bars to make a full cage for serious track days. I know it would be a totaly cuctom job, but I would like some input from you guys on the feasibility of this, as well as how you think it would hold up vs. the standard setup.

My first thoughts are that anything removable will probably remove itself in a roll.
Having said that an experienced manufacturer of racing cages backed by CAD stress analysis packages could probably make it work but the bits left behind when the frame is removed will be rather large and intrusive.
Pretty much all soft-top cars are without this sort of protection so maybe you should have bought a GTR.

I know that the front half of the cage will be very cumbersome and I will have to store it, but I am trying to figure out if it is possible, feasable. This is still in the planning stage so I don't have the kit yet.
My idea is a bolt in cage that would then bolt onto the standard roll bar. What I picture is basically a full GTR cage that is choped at the front side pod on each side, when in use the front hoop would side into a receptor where the GTR front roll hoop comes out the side pod. So you would slide the front hoop into the receptor that is welded as the GTR cage is to the chassis. Then a very very strong locking pin would keep the bar in place, or maybe bolts would be better. There would then be bolt on struts that attach the rear roll bar to the front hoop. Or you could make the struts welded onto the front hoop with a blot on connection to the rear bar. Just trying to figure out some way to get full roll over protection in the Can Am. I think it would look great with the full windshield too. Plus allow easier entrence/exit as you would have something significent to grab onto.
