Swirl & Expansion tank installation

Can anyone help? What height should the expansion tank be compared to the swirl pot (same height or above) also what is the small pipe routeing 3 pipes? can't find any info on Ultima CD!!

Hi Simon

Keep the swirl pot as high as possible. The expansion tank height is not so critical. The same height is fine. The two small connections at the top of the swirl pot are as follows;

1. The top one connects to the bottom of the expansion tank.
2. The bottom one connects to the bleed hose coming from the top of the radiator.

The top connection on the expansion tank is for an overflow.

Yes, you just run a hose to stop just under the car.

Yes. Just run a pipe down the bulkhead and leave it an inch below the chassis.

Best to keep the expansion tank dead level with the swirl pot.

I shifted the swirl pot up to fix my oil/water heat exchanger in, and the expansion tank was over flowing constantly until I leveled the two out again...

Gravity would cause this. Should be ok if the expansion tank is located higher than the swirl pot though.

There's two different caps... one is a cap and one is a pressure cap. If you think about the caps and where the hoses are the system will make sense. Pressure cap on expansion tank just in front of the overflow pipe.

I have gone through a few mods to improve the cooling and have now moved the expansion tank up to the same height as the swirl pot, which is sighted as high as it can go on a spyder rear clip - it was actually sitting right down on the drivers bulkhead. Went out for a good blast last weekend and certainly the temp gauge was indicating all was well and was the most consistent it has ever been, but it was not the true test of sitting in traffic on a hot summer's day....
