Ultima in France

Firstly hi guys/girls, I am looking into the possibility of building an Ultima over in France. Does anyone have any experience of the French legislation with this sort of vehicle (whether it is possible or not). I could also just buy an already SVA'd UK registered car but this would lead to bringing it back to the UK every year for a MOT which may prove slightly annoying as it is a 10 hour drive to Calais. Another alternative is buying a UK registered car and re-registering it over in France. Any help with what is the best solution would be much appreciated.

As far as I know its pretty much a no-no full stop.
Nothing to stop you taking a car over using it and bringing it back, but I chatting to others int the past its pretty much an impossibility to get a kit car onto french paperwork.

You could try asking the question more generally in the kit car forum..

Also my understanding that not only can you not build one you can't even register an existing one. So much for common European legislation.
Bringing back to UK for MOT works but I believe there is also a time limit on that as well.

This is why the French go mad when we turn up for LeMans in the type of car they would love to own themselves.

When i was in Lemans last year, I was approched by two local police chaps... but it was good news, they were interested in the spyder. One said that his brother looked into building an ultima, but the rules say NON. He said it was the french car industry who have managed to block any such non-french cars getting in. Even local "kits" are an issue because of "rules" so unless you build/buy a UK car, I dont think you could ever get it on the road - in france.

I think it may have something to do with the fact that it was 21.C here the other day at the end of November.

Thanks for the response guys. Just to clarify would it be possible to buy a UK car already built/registered and then re-register it over here?

Sorry mate, I think its a no. I think you can take a 'built' car to most countrys and register it, but not France.
If youre near the border somewhere I dont know if you could register it there? (say spain?)
and therefore just take it out and in again regularly? - just a thought...

I was trying my hardest not to sound condescending by saying to Gra 'where is your Ultima then' after his tongue in cheek quip and ended up being a little to clever for my own good. Suffice to say, you must spend a long time lakeside before landing the big one, but if you are patient enough, it WILL happen, eventually.

Well it is actually at my house now... allthough admitidly I haven't even opened half the boxes..
believe me im gonna be a long time at the lake too.. my missus has already said i cant stay down there too long, and I cant afford anywhere near a big enough rod fo the sort of fish you guys have caught...

As anyone here will tell you Gra (hope you don't mind me referring to you by that abbreviation) but it is not quite so important as to the amount of wedge you wish, or can afford to put into your project, that is more a case of satisfying your own remit, but the getting involved and personalizing the thing. I dare say you are well aware of this as by the look of your profile this is not your first project.

v8owner it sounds asthough the guy in this thread below has registered a kitcar in France but your advice on Spain sounds like a good idea. I will look into how difficult this is as Spain in just over an hour from me so a very viable solution

I live in Barcelona, Spain, and I was making myself the same question. I'll try to find out Richie, if is possible to register an Ultima here (If it is, I'll for sure join the "family". I'll let you know if I can find some light. I'd also appreciate if you discover something to post it.
