I have quite a few pals that ride sports bikes and after hearing me waffle on about how quick the GTW will be, are looking forward to wasting me off of the line come Spring time. Thing is, speaking from personal experience, when a bike is pitched against a car in a drag type race, it is far more difficult to get the power down on a bike than in a car and consequently most bikers never find themselves up against ant type of car that has a hope of beating them in an outright drag race.
Big BHP+element of surprise=VICTORY! Can't wait.

Riding an R1 and having driven big power Ultimas, the bike will win off the line up until 100mph or so, then aerodynamics take effect and the car will make up ground. The only problems a modern bike has putting the power down is doing so without the front flipping!

You'll never get around the fact that a modern superbike only weighs about 180-200kg wet and they pump out 140bhp plus.

The Ultima will surprise a good few bikes though yes

Besides, no good talking about how quick it 'will' be - need to see the results!

by my calculations:

R1 150bhp 180kgs + 85kg rider = 566bhp per ton.

Waynes Ultima 650bhp 1050kgs + 85kg driver = 572bhp per ton.

That's assuming Wayne is 85kg of course

Never had the balls to give my Busa full throttle off the line but a car would generaly be alot easyier to handle 0 to 60... But even at 130+ when you open the taps they take off faster than any car I've been in.. Aero didn't seem to have much effect on me... 180mph was scarily easy to hit when enjoying your self.....

Wouldn't want to put any money on either way, busa v wayne...... Busa Turbo is another matter.....

Good point that! I have a little way to go yet and very much doubt that I will ever be 85kg (unless I lose a limb or something but that may well prove counter productive).hehe

Drilling holes in it till it breaks!!!? yikes I know they say no pain, no gain but that's just madness. Just buy a bigger engine and lay off the donuts!

Stig, (long time between banter I know but only remembered whilst trawling through back posts whilst looking for something in particular) Let me ask you, 'When was the last time that you pulled away from a standstill and gave your bike the full beans?'.......... I don't honestly think that I have EVER (that is not to say that I did not THINK I did at the time but it was within my limitations and no where near that of the bike). A bike may well be capable of reaching a ton within 6 seconds but few will ever want or be able/need to in real life.

Simly put, never had the need to.

so wayne, how about adding a bike to the test next week as a benchmark?

I'd bring my Ducati along but its a bit far for me to travel (and would be no competition anyhow).

Yeah, that is a good idea Andy but for one small detail; It is not a test (even if it were, it is not down to me).
As for the Duke, it is nice to remind us of yesteryear but hardly cutting edge by today's standards is it?

No more yesteryear than a SBC, maybe less so even..... but anyhow the dukes not even in the same league performance wise as even my mear 500bhp Ultima was quicker, but its still more than I can handle in a bike. but ohhhh the noise.

I'm still betting that Waynes car will beat an R1.
