Don't you just love 'em?

It looked like I had sold my Mk 4 Sport, except that the guy buying it was taking a long time to transfer the money. He kept coming up with excuses to delay the payment. First it was an error by his bank, then a delay because of the Gulf War(?). Latest is that his garage has blown up

So, it's up for sale again. If anybody is interested in a Mk4 Sport that's road legal, but set up for track use for the bargain price of £25k. Here's a link to the advert.

Still look on the bright side James, it might be an opportunity to get it out on the track at Snetterton over Easter.

Well, if you will live in downtown Baghdad...

All the best selling the car, James. I'd be interested but I want to build one, or at least attempt to put the bits in the right places

Hi James,

I'm toying with the idea of building an Ultima like Domster but due to work commitments this may not be feasible. With this in mind I'm currently looking for a complete Ultima. I'm pretty new to the Ultima seen and wonder what tweak's would be needed to make your car road legal/practical. I note PetrolTed himself scored a 1 for Practicality !!!

Many thanks for your time
Robbie

Except that the TVRCC have said that no race cars are allowed. Even if they're road legal. Their reasoning is that "a fast car with stickers on it might upset the novices".

It's currently fully road legal. All that's required to make it road usable as well is to raise the ride height a bit (it currently rides at 55mm, which is interesting when you meet a speed bump, pothole, or large pebble) and a bit of softening up of the damper settings.

It would still get a 1 for practicality, but then so would any Ultima

Hi James,

Thanks for getting back to me with the info.

I'm not sure why I asked for practacality anyhow !

I note there is a Factory Open day on the 27th April I think. To ask a stupid question but can anyone attend this and if so do you plan to be in attendance? Maybe I can meet up with you there and take a look at the car?

Let me know what you think, I live in Surrey.

Cheers
Robbie

Robbie,

I live in Hampshire, so it might be easier for us to meet up a bit more locally, rather than travelling all the way to Hinckley

Hi James,

It would make more sense to meet up locally. The only issue I had was not to end up as a timewaster to you ! (before you ask, I don't own a garage or have any money involved in the war!). As before, I am very new to the Ultima scene and I am trying to learn how reliable these cars are and what type of regular maintenance they require to keep them up and running. I would like to use the car as often as possible (not sure you can every really class these as a 'daily driver'!) and I am trying to budget all these factors into one!

I've been reading a few of the build sites including Stig's and I wonder what budget to set aside monthly/yearly to keep the beast on the road.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again
Robbie

Robbie,

The good thing about these cars being self build is that they're designed to be easy to assemble, and therefore easy to maintain. If you have a bit of mechanical knowledge and some tools, you can maintain them yourself. However, if you want to get it done for you, any competent garage can look after it for you.

I've always done all of the work on the car myself, but if you were getting it looked after, I'd say that you would probably want one service a year, or every 6,000 miles. The As there's nothing clever in the car, you'd probably be looking at an oil change and check over. Bearing in mind that most of the running gear is from a Granada, you'll be looking at the sort of service bills you would get from a Ford. There are a few specialist parts on the car that you would be looking at getting from Ultima, but they are pretty reasonably priced in my experience.

I'd think that you'll be looking at no more than £200 or so for a service. Insurance is pretty cheap (especially if you go for limited mileage policies). I pay about £400 odd a year for 6,000 miles.

These are not expensive cars to keep. Insurance can be below £600 depending on age and they are usually basic and straight forward reliable engineering. Mine has done about 17,000 miles in less than 2 years and until recently l have had to spend very little on it. (l have just replaced the cam which suffered premature failure but not many do l understand). Certainly they are not very practical but that is the joy of the thing, it is an event each time you press the starter button. l have travelled most of Europe in my car and once you get used to small amounts of luggage there is no problem other than the crowds that gather to ask question. Go for it.

Nick, a mate of mine spotted your car parked up in Folkestone!

Hmm, l wonder why l was there, must have been a few weeks ago unless at the business centre yesterday. l live about 4 miles away so took the opportunity to do a bit of running in of the new cam.

Robbie,

That's no problem at all. Just let me know when you want to come and see it.

Drop me a mail via my profile. I sent you a mail yesterday via yours, but I guess that it might have gone to an old email address if you didn't get it.

James
