I did mine a few years back, medical is not that tough, you want to try a flying one, still not got mine....

The day is really nothing to worry about, you don't even have to drive fast just smooth, and the test at the end, (to think I studied for it)multiple choice and there really easy.

When you see a red flag should you
a. speed up
b. slow down and return slowly to the start line or the pits.
c. slam on your brakes.

Tip: don't wear a Peltor helmet with built in ear defenders, I could not hear a word he was saying to me.

Did my ARDS last year at Silverstone - Great day out. If you do the full day you have good tuition in the Lotus Exige before the exam and Driving Test - There is no pressure to go flat out but as you build confidence they like to see you press on a bit. It also included a couple of go's at auto-testing in a Caterham - great fun, I'd recommend it.
The medical was a breeze - they list several doctors you can use but there is no problem using your own GP - just get him to fill out the medical form then take it along to your driver training.

SplatSpeed - are you going to be racing an Ultima? If so I would be interested in which races!
I just uploaded another little clip of an Invitation race with the Aston Martin Owners Club - This was my first ever days racing so I took it easy and managed to stay out of trouble - Just - unlike a few others.

Holy sh1te!!!! What the hell was going on there!! That two tone vehicle (Lotus 340R?) doing? Looks like it had an attack of the snakes off the line and side swiped that green one!! Ouch. Good job you stopped where you did. If you'd pulled out you might have been caught up in one yourself...

Chewy,

Looking at your vids...

1) Why was the wishbone bending? Is it anything we need to worry about?

2) When you dragged everyone off the start line, where did you end up?

LuckyP - you’re right - After the race they banned 'open wheel' cars from future races.
It was a shame (apart from the damage to some beautiful cars) as I enjoyed any competition and it was great having a variety of different cars in the race. I had a great start off the line against the 'supercharged Honda' powered Lotus just in front - Another example of lots of grunt low down with our V8's and dropping the clutch at just over 2000rpm. I did manage to come 3rd after the restart
driving

It was following another race at Silverstone where the wishbone went - that was one of the other clips I posted where I got into the lead by the first corner - I think racing put a little too much strain on the standard item compounded by the 120kg extra weight I was carrying to comply with the power to weight ratio (which I later found out I allready complied with as they told me after the race that it was measured at the wheels)

Are those rose jointed wishbones?
Most of us will be using the poly bushed versions but the rose joint system is intended for track use and the wishbones themselves are I believe stronger.
Chewy will now shoot this down by telling us they were the stronger ones!!!!

These were the standard Poly Bushed ones. Rose joints will be fitted for any future races.

As far as I know the rose jointed versions have the same type of mounting they just have female threaded ends....

So it's not too difficult to adapt the std bushed ones to rosejoints?

The rosejointed setup seems a fair bit extra (approx £1300 over std?), considering the rosejoints themselves can't be more than £300ish?

Message from factory last week:

Grant

The rose jointed wishbones are fabricated from a heavier duty tube and they do bolt straight on to the chassis see pic.
The price is £780 plus VAT for the wishbones and £1073 plus VAT for the set of race quality rose and spherical joints.

Best regards
Ted

^ For sure, it is not a straight forward job to convert from bush to rose joints and I am sure that I have heard that the rose jointed wishbones are made from thicker / stronger material but am unable to confirm this. The right person will be able to convert the standard wishbones I am sure and after seeing the problem that Chewy experienced, it may be a worthwhile modification to weld a gusset along the bottom of each wishbone to add a bit of strength at least if track work is to be favoured. Personally, I have decided that if I should feel the need to move to RJ suspension, I will have a set of wishbones purpose made by someone independent ( if only so as to modify to my own specification ).

Can someone give me some good news about poly bushed wishbones please......

Gonna be tracking soon (not racing) and I prefer for the limiting factor in the car's handling characteristics to be me......rather than failed components!!

I guess trackdays and racing are not exactly the same, the stress from racing will be far higher than your average trackday.

Chewy, do you always use slicks or do the class rules stipulate road legal tyres?

To be fair fellas, Chewy's is the only failure of this type that I have been aware of since my interest in the marque began some 8 / 9 years ago so I am willing to bet that this is an isolated incident. Deadscoob is indeed right in as much as even if a slightly more track orientated tyre is used, this will put a fair bit more strain on said component especially round a track.

I have never tried slicks as it was a series that specified 'road legal' tyres.
However I have no plans for racing this year and am looking towards 2008 when I would like to contest a series like 'Britcars' which requires quite a few modifications to the fuelling system and the move to slicks.
I have done 14,000 road miles and a couple of track days over the last 3 years with no concerns over the wishbones. It’s only after my first race where I got my confidence to start pressing on through the bends and started to feel I was on the limit of the Ultima. I was surprised at myself and the car as too how much harder I was able to push during racing as apposed to track days and feel the pressure on the car is magnified enormously.
The move to slicks will be another big step in terms of stress on the car (and my driving abilities) and I would not consider that without the rose joint option.
