Waste of time?
Discussion
Am I wasting my time thinking that I can rescue the needle roller bearing and holder from the end of my sick crank shaft. I remember that drifting it in to position was fun - so trying to get it out I think is a no-no, no?
Also, the new crank shaft end plate has no peg to engage with the flywheel. With the six bolts in and torqued do I need the peg or is it more for alignment than strength/balance?

You can get them out but the likelihood of it being in good condition and the pain in the backside of having to take the 'box out again if it failed is not worth it.
The crank is a difficult one and if it were me I would ask Peter Knight (P15ton where are you). Yes the bolts will be strong enough to carry the load but you will be applying acceleration and deceleration loads one after the other which could loosen the bolts. The drive pin will eliminate any relative movement between the flywheel and the shaft.
I think I've just talked myself into saying you should dowel it.

Oh, Steve, whilst your there....
The thermostat housing (chromed water take off to swirl tank) came back loose (probably use different take off for their bench set up). It has a rubber seal on it's underside which sits proud to the housing. Is this all that seals against the block, no need for sealant of any kind or gasket? Do you know a torque?
Sos - but I wanna get the engine in and plumbed today....then the lawn!

Yes the 'O' seal does the sealing on its own. Personally I smear it with vaseline (Petroleum jelly) which allows it to slip as it is tightened and find where it wants to finally sit and seal. Don't know a torque but with an 'O' seal it is not reliant on a tight face to face so gently does it.
With the high levels of precipitation over the last few weeks my advise would be that you should not consider lawn mowing until the beginning of next month.

Thumb twiddling it is then!!
Oh and Steve, I've got this rash.................perhaps not.
Thanks - over and out.

You should fit a dowel pin. An engineering firm may have some hardened material of the correct diameter. As for the needle bearings, you usually pack the end of the crank with thick grease. Then get something of similar i/d to the bearings and tap it in a few times. Grease can't compress so the grease should push out the bearing. It may take a few attempts but is quite rewarding when it works.

Lawn not mowed, but engine in
Drove the pin outta the sick crank and squeezed it home through flywheel and crank....it ain't comin' out in a hurry!
Just gotta get a spiggot bearing from the factory and the clutch and I can get back on the road.......today was a driving day. Need to get out there!!
Thanks for your help all.
