everyone else has been going the other way.... i.e bigger, so why smaller (although size isn't everything I keep telling the wife!)

So will my 355 not be the smallest Ultima engine any longer??

I looked at a Rover V8 engined sport 4 years ago (3.9 litres), and I seem to remember someone on here running a highly tuned 2 litre Cossie Engined sport.

I'm putting a 305ci SBC in mine, there are plenty of articles around that say you can get 350bhp and good torque out of these lumps. They are also very cheap - mine cost me £156!!!

I have spoken to an ex Tyrrel engine builder who rekons that 400bhp plus is pretty straight forward with a decent pair of heads - I'm guessing that at this point it would be cheaper to buy more ci....

Why 302ci?????

302 has the 350 4 inch bore

but the 3 inch so it is reduced from 4 inch to 3"

think 305 is a smaller bore

That sounds about right

305 has a 3.736 bore and 3.48 stroke
302 has a 4 bore and 3 stroke

I guess this make the 302 rev a lot harder?

Had a look around for a 302 - pretty rare engine unless you build from scratch.

Good write up on a new build here:

www.hotrod.com/techarticles/302_small_block_chevy_engine_build/

And the Dyno runs are here:

www.hotrod.com/techarticles/302_small_block_chevy_dyno_test_tune/

That's impressive - 550bhp and 23mpg in a ’65 Chevelle!! I'm begining to like your thinking.

think the 327 is the 305 with a 4" bore

Nope, that would be a 350, the 327 has a 3.25" stroke. The 305 and 350 both use the same crank and have a 3.48" stroke. This is what makes the 305 "not a good" engine......but I like a challenge!! What you want is a small stroke and large bore (as per 302ci) which allows the engine to rev harder. Longer strokes are better for torque at the bottom end but top out much further down the rev range.

Have a look at this site for most of the combinations:
