Naff wheels required

Does anyone know if its possible to get a set of naff wheels and tyres for a GTR, just good enough to do the build? I got the thing on a dolly, but I can't move it out of the garage due to the drive being a bit of a slope. I can't afford the £3.5k for the Ultima wheels right now(!), but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other wheels that I can get cheap just to use for the next 12 months or so...

I'm pretty sure that you can fit Granada wheels. Go to the breakers yard and get a set of Granada wheels and mount them with the inside facing out (to clear the brake discs. The 5 stud pattern is the same.

Blimey, where have you been hiding?! Welcome!!

Just a suggestion - how about ply discs (painted black of course)? You can't be much over 150KG per corner at the mo. Would look kinda F1.

I did read the previous post but failed to digest the relevant suggestion for some strange reason. Yes, it is in fact a good idea and I see no reason why it will not work.

An even easier way is to use 24mm marine ply (good quality formwork grade).... yes, I am serious, some hot rod builders use this method... this will be much easier to work around than wheels.

Ply wheels is the way to go.
Granada will fit (back to front) but will most likely foul the bodywork.

Considered the ply wheels myself when I completly failed to find a trailer wide enough to take my completed car up to the factory. Only avoided it when I found a wide trailer in the back of a hire company yard that they had forgotten about.

Thanks guys. Sounds like ply is king, but I have to say I'm not sure about it taking the weight. Though I am sure it won't be SVA compliant! Thinking of it, maybe I could stick a bicycle tyre on each bit of ply to stop it from splitting and sliding down my driveway. Might just work. Ever seen an Ultima with bicycle wheels before? (I wonder if kit car mag would do a feature on it...)

BTW - for the wheels I am considering an alternative to the Ultima factory ones just to be a bit distinctive. Got to do some research first but already found a couple of places that do some decent looking wheels at reasonable prices. But whatever happens I'm getting them anodised (or whatever they do to colour them) as I'm not the worlds biggest fan of bling shiny wheels, certainly not on the blue gel body that I've got arriving next week (I hope! - got to call Ted...). But that's just personal taste.

Sorry for hiding away before now. Problem is I can't really be helpful as I don't know enough tech details to offer any assistance, and it feels a bit cheeky to just take from everyone... But I think PH is great, certainly I've learned a lot (and laughed somewhat too!).

Mate.... no need to sit back in the stands... there is always something to contribute. Im kinda thinking your feeling quite chuffed to have had some responses.... so does everyone when they are building. One of the best contributions you can make is to give others a pat on the back along the way, or just poke fun at Wayne, that's always fun.

As for the ply, use marine ply, its the stuff used for formwork for concrete, its got a dark, shiny surface. That is the extremely strong and if you use 24mm it will be more than strong enough for front and rear. Get some galv washers and you'll need normal nuts (not domed wheel nuts)

If you want some really naff wheels you could borrow Waynes.... see what I mean... I'll bet everyone has a giggle about that.

I thought I was bad enough having mie sat in the garage for 4 months whilst I try and get some motivation to do the bloody panelling. Hopefully I'll do it faster than 3 years

I think wheel choice is as important as the bodywork being done correctly - easy to spoil the look of the car with "wrong" wheels.

Kinesis wheels are beautiful, see Craftys or kwrights pics for them, but you won't save money on them.

Reckon the only things that would look better would be centre lock BBS race wheels. imo.

I've aquired a set of 4 space savers - makes the car very easy to move around. I don't know the PCD but it is standard to Ford and Volvo these days so there is plenty of choice.

Granny rears don't fit - they foul the lower suspension bolt.
I just made this a "sacrificial" bolt.
Pretty sure Ted & Richard had a Sweeney photo of it when they were doing some work on it at the time.

Sorry Grant, I have been 'beavering' away in the garage (that word was used just for your benefit) trying in vain to get the GTW ready for the big one.
If I do ever get around to posting this video I have been harping on about, you can see for yourself that my rims are anything but 'naff', but I guess there is no accounting for taste is there Grant
