Audi V8, how much?

So from what I have gathered there are a few Ultimas that have been built with Audi engines, big advantage to my mind would be that you could use it with the quattro gearbox which is a transaxle anyway, just need to have some custom half shafts made up to mate with the centre diff.

Problem is I have trawled the world wide web trying to get a price for the above engine new, to try and get some idea how they stack up against the US V8s but so far can find anything!

Does anyone have any ideas how much the following would be:

a. 4.2 40 valve Audi V8 engine
b. The earlier 32 valve Audi v8s, (though probably not new)

Eric: Not to rain on your parade, but dude why an Audi? The LS series engine is cheaper per horse than anything out there besides a sbc. You can buy LS2 crate motors in the states with 400 horse power for less than $5K U.S. The factory has now seen the light and everything you need is available off the shelf. On top of all that I do not know what the Audi v8 weighs but the new M3 V8 weighs more than an LS by around 20 lbs. Then if you want faster yet, talk to Jeff Schwartz in the U.S. about an LS 7. I know its easy to sit here in California and trash your Audi plans. But if you build a Ultima with an Audi I only wish you the very best of luck and if I could ever be of help I would. Lee

The audi engine and box makes a real world saving of 70kgs over the american V8 in an Ultima (I know people who have swopped to them from the SBC), but I hate to say it but my understanding is that the quatro box is not suitable as it would not handle the power in 2wd only... you'd need the A6 diesel 6 speed box which fortunatelly bolts straight on as well.

As for pricing, I recon they will be a fortune brand new.

70kgs for an Audi vs a sbc> A ls1 is 110 to 120 bs lighter than a sbc and thats assuming the sbc is equipped with aluminum heads if not add another 40 to 50 lbs in favor of the LS1. lEE
