Hi Luger, have a look at the following link to see a set of downdraught carbs on an SBC. Advertised power was 430hp but the guy who bought it has had it dynoed at nearly 550hp.http://www.britishamericanengines.co.uk/chevy_ultimates.asp

I have done a lot of testing of SBC's including 48 IDA's against Single Holley on all types & sizes, and I can state quite confidently that IDA's will knock a load of power off any decent SB Chevy.

However, they do look great.

I've seen others that state that webers were a good thing if appropriatly tuned.

That being said the expense of four webers and a manifold is near that of efi so it is a no-brainer unless you absolutely don't want a computer on your car.

Victor Jr & single Holley, we've seen 620bhp plus using this on a racing 377, a change to 48 IDA's using 42, and even 45mm chokes knocked it down to 530bhp.
This is a typical loss on a really stonking engine. On a mild engine, say 400ish, you might even see a gain using IDA's. The fact is that a 48mm throttle body will not pass much air. Graphs overlaid showed power equal to the Holley up to 4100rpm with the 42mm chokes, and 4400rpm with the 45mm chokes, then the Holley pulls away by a big margin. Most of the EFI Kinsler stuff we use is around 65mm per cylinder, which sees no drop of cfm when tested on the cylinder head on a flow bench.

The Holley has 4 venturis versus 8 for the Webers, what size are the venturis on the 850 Holley?

OK, the Holley has 1.75" throttle bores, but the intake has a PLENUM CHAMBER which allows ALL EIGHT cylinders to draw from all four thottle bores, ie 850 cfm of air. Individual runner manifolds only allow each cylinder to draw on the respective throttle, in this case 1 x 48mm.

Great point. Ideally what would the diameter of an individual throttle body be for a...377 V8?

7500 rpm redline, max power at 6500, 542 Hp. What formula are you using to figure this?

Around 55-57mm if you're doing a lot of road use.

Figured using 'The Formula of life!'

So Holley or Edelbrock (Weber)? I know that AS seemed to get better BHP figures (not that that makes a better engine) from the Edelbrock all other things being equal(on the same dyno), but my own view is that the Edelbrock carbs are a PITA because of the fact you need sets of metering rods to change the mixture.

Eh.....?

I think you're confusing italian Weber 48 IDA twin chokes with those sad chrome plated 1950's Carter AFB replica pieces of sh*t that Edelbrock / Weber USA sell.

Not confusing them at all, I was asking you a question, as you said you knew about such things. I have one of those "piece of sh*t" carbs that you mention. I've often wondered if I should change to a Holley as they seem easier to set up and more people are familiar with them. But at the time the Edelbrock 800CFM carbs being fitted by AS were getting better dyno figures than Holley carbs (back to back with identical setup).
