I'm thinking of changing my getrag 6 speed for a g50 5 speed and changing the ratios,

How much can I get for my gearbox???
How much is a g50 gearbox???
I have center mounted gearstick, will this work ok on the g50??do I need a different bell housing adapter/starter motor??

any help appreciated!!

Dilley.

If the box is cable shift then I think that I am correct in saying that you will not be able to use it on a G50. I think you will be OK on the adapter and starter motor.

I don't 'Know' but suspect the adaptor and starter will be differnet. There are several versions for the G50.

Adapter and starter are definatelly different, as will be the clutch and flywheel.

The Getrag gearbox is worth more than the G50 but G50's are going up rapidly and finding one below £1500 is going to be a challenge, even ebay ones are going for that now.

The central gearchange may be able to be used with the G50 but it hasn't been done yet so expect a little engineering, you could of cause get a GT2/3 box thats basically a G50 with cable shift, but it will not be cheap if you can find one

So £1500 for the box, £1500 for the adapter etc and £300-400 for the gearchange... less what you can sell your parts for... then you can start spending on the ratios (£600 each ish plus fitting).

Not a cheap swop out.

just a quick question but is it not possible to change the crownwheel and pinion on the getrag or g50 to change the final drive ratio ???

yes on the G50 (I an doing this on my box).... no on the 996 Getrag apparently as the parts are not available.

However I have noticed a company on Ebay doing a rebuild service for the Getrag.... they might be worth speaking to as if they can get the internals to do a rebuild (and for nearly 2k you'd hope they can) they may be able to change the ratios now.

is the porsche 996 tiptronic c2(?) the same as the g50 or getrag,?(mounting wise or a replacement for my 6 speed getrag) I'm assuming this could be used with paddle shift??

Buying uprated fifth gear for the G50 cost £400 from Powerhaus, and was relatively easy to fit, only tool I didn't have to hand was a set of gear pullers. Took under a hour to do on the box while out of the car.

but would it not be better to change the final drive ratio as this would make all gears longer ???

got to be more cost effective than changing a gear set !!! i'm with you Dilley got to be someone who will do it .

Someone investigated the wheel/pinion and found Powerhaus (i think) who said yes they could develop one but needed an up-front order for (i think) five sets.
If they don't have one on the shelf then I doubt any others will either.

A second hand CWP will cost around £1k and isn't as simple to fit as a 5th gear... what one do you have? I suspect you already have the highest one in there thats available.

You're correct Steve - I was the one that investigated this. I went to Powerhaus to see if I could change my ratios as I felt the Getrag wasn't geared tall enough. Unfortunately they didn't have an 'off the shelf' solution but would make up ratios on request as an (expensive) bespoke build. Multiple sets would work out a fair bit cheaper but I didn't get any further as, when I canvassed interest, I got no response.

So like you Andrew I have a centre shift cable setup that I would like to marry up with a gearbox with taller ratios than my standard Getrag, but I'm struggling. Let me know if you succeed.

The topic of final drive for the Getrag has been raised a few times over the last couple of years. When I first got mine there were very few about but they are obviously more popular now. I expressed my interest previously and would still be interested in the new gearing if anyone is looking to pursue this route and needs additional numbers.

it must be better value to change crown wheel and pinion rather than a gear set ??? and you get better ratios through the hole box .
