GTR vs Mk IV

Are there any significant differences under the skin between these two models?

Is the MK IV the same as the 'Sports' model? If so, aren't the main differences between the two just redesigned bodywork?

I'm curious as I doubt I'll be able to afford a GTR in the near future (wife and kids and all that) but I might be able to get hold of a MK 4 for 10-20k less.

The main difference is the redesigned bodywork. However, there are also some changes to the chasis. The GTR is an evoliution of the Mk4 (otherwise known as the Mk4 Sports, or just Sports), rather than a revolution. They're basically the same car under the skin.

If you want a very nice Mk4 Sports, mine is up for sale for a mere 22,500 GBP

Main changes to the chassis are in the front. The radiator suport and all the 1" box section around it is different, the GTR rad is at 37 degress from horizontal, the Mk4 is alot less, so cooling was improved with the GTR. Also the hager point for the front body work are different. Basicaly chop of the front of a GTR and weld it onto a Sports.

There are also lots of small changes. Most were to make the car more SVA friendly. Flush/hidden door hindges, electric mirrors and small changes like these. They also needed to bring the wing inboard I believe, hence the changes with it's mounts.

But as said, the GTR was an evolution.
